I've been collecting coins for several years. Some of my coins are from the late 1800's and the early 1900's. They look a little dingy. Should I just leave them as they are, or should they be cleaned? If I can clean them what is the safest method? I'm excited to be here, and I can't wait to learn things.

Cleaning coins is generally frowned upon. It can reduce their appeal and value. Two "cleaning/preserving" methods that are generally safe are an acetone dip (pure acetone only) and BadThad's VERDI-CAREâ„¢. A search will turn up several threads about cleaning coins.

Never clean a coin unless you really know what your doing. And even then, shouldn't be done in most cases. What this forum needs is a sticky called cleaning coins. If you use the search tab and type in coin cleaning or cleaning coins you should find lots of stories about this.

Thank you both! I think I'll just leave them as they are. I don't want to risk messing them up. My great-aunt bought me the oldest ones before she died. They hold a special place in my heart.

Welcome to CC!

There's a difference between cleaning and conserving a coin. If you don't understand that difference, you should leave your coins alone! Many collectors end-up ruining their coins by attempting to clean them.....so, in general, the best advice is to LEAVE THEM ALONE.
