I'd love to hear from everyone what their oldest coin is, and if it or something else is your prized possession.

My oldest coin is a 1897 Barber quarter. I have another one that is from 1899. They aren't in the best shape, but these coins along with a few others are my prized coin possessions.

This coin is my oldest, and is my only Greek coin. It's a bronze posthumous coin of Alexander the Great, minted sometime between 323-310 BC.

Those are amazing! I somewhere have some coins that are supposed to be Roman. The details are so hard to see though that you can't tell much about them. I got them off of ebay quiet a few years ago. I need to pull them back out, and look them over again with a fresh eye. I may even be able to find some clues on this website to help me figure out what they are exactly.

I have a 1914 I found out in the high desert of Utah on a mountain biking trip about 10 years ago. It had been there for a long long time in my estimation, due to the fact that the dirt all around it had eroded away, leaving a 1-2" pillar under the coin (this odd little pillar is what caught my eye when I stopped to rest). Not a lot of rain in the great basin/high desert area by Vernal.

It was a great trip with my father-in-law and pretty darned neat to find a coin like that.

I have a greek coin which could be as old as 400BC, but could also be as new as 288BC, because they were produced for so long.

As far as legal tender is concerned, the oldest coin I could still go out and spend is an 1880 Morgan dollar.

If you take pics of them and post them in the Ancients section, someone will be more than happy to help ID them.
