is it just me or does the mint mark in the first picture look like an "S"

The two reverse shots appear to have some slight photographic differences but most likely a variable incident lighting angle caused these aberrations.

Assuming that both shots are from the same coin a couple of side-by-side closeups of the mint mark should assist to clarify this issue.

Mdp hit it right on the head. Bad photography.is the root of the confusion. it is a D mintmark through and through.
