I like the designs of all of the 2009 pennies (much better than the new design for them). When I first started gathering them in spare change back in 2009 I would find a few every week.
Now, however, I sometimes won't find any for weeks, if not months, on end. Are they really that popular? And if so, is it just the collectors who are hoarding them or the general public as well?
I know with their lower than normal mintages there won't be a whole lot of them in circulation in general, but with them seeming to be hoarded I am questioning if they will become as 'scarce', so to speak, as wheaties in the next few years. I would love to continue to find these pennies for years to come, but with the collectors, hoarding, and general wear and tear of them I am not sure how long until they are rarer than wheaties.
Anyone have any other thoughts on the 2009 pennies?

Two reasons why they're already harder to find: #1: Zinc Rot #2: Saving nice examples from circulation costs only one cent per coin. If that's not "affordable", what is? I did get a Philly LP2 (Log Splitter) in change the other day.

Yeah, zinc rots very quickly unfortunately. I have seen it happen a thousand times while metal detecting. And like you said DNA, who can't afford to hold onto a penny? lol
I, for some reason, do not have a lot of the log cabin and log splitter Lincolns, but have quite a few of the older 2. Personally, I prefer the log cabin and log splitter variety much more than the older 2.

I love the series. When I roll search I save them for no other reason than wanting them all! That's my 2 cents err 1 cent : )

I keep all that I find. I have a harder time finding 2009 nickels.

I noticed that they are scarce as well.

I find enough of them in rolls to find a couple nice doubled dies, especially the formative years design.

I seldom find them in circulation. All three years of the shield cents, however, are very common.

I was lucky enough to be working with change when they were released. I have about 5 rolls of uncirculated cabin cents, 20-ish rolls of log splitters (my work got about 3 boxes from the bank, all untouched and the cash office was happy enough to trade my rolls of regular pennies for them, so I did), maybe 100 loose professional life, and one lonely presidential. How I NEVER got the presidentials is beyond me, since the one that I got was pretty well circulated and from the other side of the country. So, I admit to hoarding just about a full cent box worth of the pennies, for what it's worth. I remember people on ebay who would intercept full, sealed boxes on their way to the bank and sell them for over $200 each. Has anyone actually seen a large number of LP4 (presidential) in circulation?

Mid-2009 in Denver, D-mint LP-3's were all over the place. I received hundreds of them in my change. I even took five rolls of those with me to Seattle to spend while I was on vacation. A decent quantity of LP-1's appeared in Denver two months after their release, but the LP-2 and LP-4 were harder to find. You still see them more than Wheaties (of course!), but they're now around the same odds as finding a nice Copper LMC(not "impossible", but notable when you find one).

I know that at least 2500 of the LP1-LP4 never made it into circulation. They are are still in OBW rolls stashed away in my closet. Edit: And thanks to one of our members here on the forum whom I was able to trade P's for D's so they are half & half.
