Three months ago I walked into a Bank Of America to get cash. I asked if they had any 50 cent pieces. I walked out with 20 silver coins. I have been addicted ever since!

I work at a bank now. Every day I go through at least one box of pennies and one of nickels. I have a thing for wheat pennies. Eventually I bought a great book: 66th edition of the Red Book. It does a great job of pointing things in the right direction.

I keep anything with an S on it as those seem the hardest to find BY FAR!!

Then I started searching the internet and found you guys!! My first question is: WHAT DOES BU mean?

I have my own collection going, but I am affraid I am bypassing some hugh value targets with my lack of knowledge. Is there anything that you guys are finding particularly to locate?

I look forward to be able to hit the trade/barter section once I make my fourth post.

I don't want to hold onto thousands of coins, I don't have the room, but it would be great to make a few bucks and help out others with this same addiction!!

Thank you again.

BTW: My best find so far is a 1895 Indian Head penny. Got it in a box from the bank. Makes me wonder what else we hand out with these rolls!!

Also, I am finding a TON of foreign coins in the rolls people roll themselves. Any clue how to find their value (other than ebay or purchasing another book!)

I would consider the 20 silver halfs to be a better find.. But congrats on both!

Jeffelt - you might make some money off of foreign coins. check the exchange rate, often they are worth more than the coin they have replaced. Get a load of jars and start filling them.

Nice find!

I have never found an IHC in rolls or circulation.
Rest in Peace

BU means 'brilliant uncirculated'. It is used for a coin that has not been circulated at all and is also pretty shiny because it has been properly stored.

If you're looking at coins from the bank, you will likely find some AU, about uncirculated, coins and those can be pretty good.

As for searching...it won't be easy to do that quickly while at work. A lot of the cool finds will require using a loupe and a bit of time with the books.

However, it sounds like you're doing just fine grabbing up the oldies. There are key dates that are valuable but if you're grabbing up all the oldies, you will have the coins at home and you can look them up one at a time in the Red Book.

Just be careful not to let them bounce around and get scratched and DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THEM because that devalues a coin. Buy some Saflips or 2X2's for storage.

GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN! LOL I live just north of you a couple hundred miles. We find less 'S' mint because we live closer to the Denver mint. As you study, you'll find that in certain instances, an 'S' mint is valuable but in others, its just a matter of geography.

Btw, I've been at this awhile but I'm still learning. For instance, I just learned not to discount common foreign coins (Thanks BenByfield and Monks).

Great help everyone!! I am very glad I got on here. I am averaging 4 Wheat pennies per 25 dollar box right now. Varying dates. I did find a 1911 penny. I am amazed how coins that old make it to wherever they roll these!

Anyone looking for anything specific out there?
