Quote:Are there any
Kennedy half dollar coins worth holding onto after 1970? What should I look for? Thanks!
Are you looking for Business strike coins, proof or both?
By "worth holding onto after 1970?" do you mean more then face value?
As some one else mentioned, buying a copy of the "
Red Book" would be a great addition to any personal library.
CherryPickers' Guide would be alright if you want to get into some of the varieties but a general rule would be any legitimate die variety would be worth more then face value but like the book "Animal Farm" some worth more then others.
Some
Kennedy half dollars you might find worth holding onto after 1970:
1. Any date with a mintage of less then 3,000,000 (
Red Book would give a list of mintages).
2. Any "conditional rarity" Example, if you have a 1971-P which you think would grade MS67 or MS68 at one of the major grading companies, even though it is a common date and mint mark, you would have a $1,000 coin or more if it in deed made one of those grades.
3. Understand and be able to tell the difference from regular business strike coin to satin finish coins for the year 2005 â€" 2010. High grade non satin finish coins will hold a higher premium then the same graded counterpart.
4. Any nice error coins. There are several out there, heavy die clashes, rotated dies are just a couple of examples of what can be found in just roll searching.
5. Die varieties in general, the nicer the spread and ease to see plus condition will all be factors in the final price. A few business strikes that come to mind after 1970 would be 1971-P DDO-001, 1971-D DDO-004 / DDO-006 /DDO-013, 1972-P DDO-001, 1973-D DDO-001, 1974-D DDO-001 and the 1977-D DDO-001. For the proof side, a few to look for are the 1971-S DDO-004 / DDO-006 / DDO-008, 1973-S DDR-003, 1979-S Type II, 1981-S Type II, 1988-S DDO-001 and the 1992-S Silver DDO-001. A written description far all of these varieties can be found in the CONECA master listings.
