I found a coin on the ground one day that read "ONE DIME" on the back. The coin is very damaged and hard to read but I was able to identify it as a Barber dime. Still, I am uncertain because the date, at first, seemed to read "1990" which is completely illogical. This might have been caused by the flattening of the coin around the edges and could instead read "1890." Yet, I don't think there were Barber dimes until 1892... Otherwise, it could be read as 1900 if the zero was made to look like a nine when it was scratched. If you know anything about these coins, please reply to this post.

Thank you!

Edit: I've posted a larger picture of the date and a picture of the back.

It's difficult to see from the picture...but I agree that the second "9" could well be a "0" that has been damaged. Any chance of a closer view of just the date?

Sorry but the picture is just way too small to determine. Any chance of getting a close up of the date?

It definitely looks like an 1890 Barber dime to me. Given the obverse, I'd call it Almost Good AG3 condition. Can you provide a picture of the reverse also? I'd like to see if a mint mark can be determined.

The trouble is, Barber dimes began mintage in 1892.

Thanks. Hopefully, I'll be able to give you a more intelligent answer than my previous post...
