The collection I am inventorying has US proof sets from 1983 through 1991 (5 sets from each year). All of the sets are still tightly sealed in the original hard plastic display cases.

I have noticed on all of the 1985 sets a discoloration/oxidation of the edges on the pennies and the Nickels. Is there a way I can get these remounted to prevent further damage to the coins or should I just leave them this way and hope the oxidation does not spread?

Any Suggestions are appreciated.

Welcome to the forum kmban. If the oxidation started on the edges, it'll most likely continue to discolor the rest of the coin. The solution for stopping or slowing down the discoloration process is to remove the coins from the mint holders. This would require breaking them out of the protective case. Recently I had to remove an Ike dollar out of the mint case due to discoloration.

Thanks for the info. does anyone know if there is a way to get replacement mint cases I think it looks better than the 2X2 to display the sets.

Some of the time you can take a dremel and cut the case open on the edge and then reseal it using a plexiglas glue that does not discolor like super glue.

If the coins are not to discolored you can try and seal them in an intercept bag, these can be ordered from Australia. http://www.endangeredheritage.com/supplies.htm
I am sure that some of the members here could get them and ship them to the US cheaper than the company.
