Bought an 1867 Seated Liberty today. It was marked "planchet error?" It looks cleaned also. Anyhoo, it has a raised bump on the obverse side, and it's either raised or indented on the reverse. I did my best with the pictures. It's definately raised on the obverse. I just can not tell on the reverse...I'm thinking it's raised on both sides? it's right on the wing so hard to tell. If it is raised on the reverse, it's nothing like the obverse. So let me have it...Error or PMD! Also. The bump goes from the knee to the fourth star up. (just to be clear)

It looks recessed on the wing to me, which might account for the weak detail on the wing. If it was PMD I would expect more damage on the wing next to the recessed area between the wing and body. So planchent error of some sort.

yeah, it does look cleaned. Dipped anyway. Nice coin.

It didn't cross my mind that there would be damage present with PMD. Makes sense though. Thanks for the compliment on the condition. That's the main reason I bought it.

Personally I suspect it has had some repair work done in the fields.

like post mint repair? Why would someone do such a thing on a common coin?

Is it a common coin? You haven't bothered to say what it is other than it's an 1867. And the two pictures provided cut off just about every clue to what it is. A 67 or 67 S quarter isn't that common, neither is a 67 dollar. The 67 or 67 S halves aren't that scarce, but the one clue I see in the pictures tend to say that it isn't a half dollar.

As to the repair work I have often seen the fields look like that after the removal of scratches or graffiti, initials etc. And you have to admit even as a "common" coin it would be worth a lot less with initials scratched in the field. Repair the fields and it becomes much more salable to someone who thinks they are getting a "bargain"

My bad Conder101. It's just a basic 1876 Seated Liberty quarter dollar. Must've had a dyslexic moment cause I put 1867 on my first post. Oops.

Looks to me like it was dented on the obverse, maybe through some soft material like leather that prevented an obvious punch mark. The reverse bulge in the lower wing seems consistent with an obverse dent.
