Hello people I am just putting this to you hardcore detectorists . Come to the UK on your next holiday/vacation with your detector and apply for your crown estate permit to detect and I guarantee you will be shocked at how much is buried here in comparison to the US. If you know where abouts to look you can almost bet on at least 1 medieval coin per day on top of the countless more modern ones you will find. If. Any of you decide to come here then post me a message and I will point you too some nice sites. ( I'm gutted that I was detecting for 2 years only less than 5 miles from where the Staffordshire hoard was found near my house) so it is there but it's just finding it.

Thanks Narrow---a detecting trip there IS on my so-called "Bucket List"....I did hear of a recent hoard found somewhere there, not that I'd find a hoard, would be happy with 1 find, 2000 years old....heck, where I'm from(Northern California), I'm lucky to find something from "Only" as old as 1800 on up....

It was th biggest Saxon gold hoard ever found and I was less than a mile from it at one point. Imagine how gutted I was!

I think that metal detecting in the U.K. would be an awesome experience. Just to be in touch with the wonderful history of that land.
Here in North America, we have a different sense of "old".
One day, I was speaking to a colleague (who had immigrated from the U.K.) about a building of local historic significance. I referred to the 100 year old building as "old". He chuckled and enlightened me that an old building would be one that might be 1500 years old :)

I havent had a chance to detect yet.
However, heres the 'old' thing in my area: The old buildings are 500 - 1000 years old (our very oldest standing continually used building is only about 1100 though, our castle is a bit...beaten up, also from about 1100). Victorian homes are about what id call a good age for a house - worn in. Post Victorian houses are considered new - after WW2 they basically still have New House Smell.

Oh look I've missed it again . Another Saxon gold hoard found less than 5 miles fom my house just before Christmas. I am in the best place in the world for detecting and I've missed two gold hoards.

Was there just last August and found close to 40 pounds in change just in the play areas of a few parks in Bedford.
Would love the opportunity to detect some old undisturbed areas. I will be sure to contact you next time I cross the pond.
How much is a crown estate permit?

How challenging is it to get permission from land owners in the UK?

Crown permit is free you just have to apply for it and I think it lasts 12 months. It's a very basic permit and they email it to you. Landowners here are usually quite good as long as you tell them you will split any finds worth money 50/50. Usually works with me! A couple of times I've been told to go away but it's quite rare. In uk we have thousands of public footpaths going all over ancient sites as footpaths are ancient in origin and no one can stop you going on them. Only problem is there's a junk as well as finds. I usually go to the sides of them and sneakily scan the edges of undisturbed and less junky fields

I'm stationed over here in the UK right now. I'm trying to find a good detector without breaking the bank(stupid exchange rate). Any ideas on finding one? As soon as I do get a detector we will have to try to meet up so that I can learn from a pro.
