I found this the other day and was hoping that anyone may be able to verify it. It is from New Zealand. It has stamped on it "Petone Railway Workshops Peace Demonstration" 11-6-1902 (June 11, 1902).

I can verify it. It is a New Zealand Medal catalogued as Morel 1902/2 (Medallic Commemoratives of New zealand 1865 - 1940 Leon G. Morel 1996)

The medal came in two varieties a lead R5 and a brass R6. I have a lead example of this medal

R5= rare 11-25 known
R6= Very rare 4-10 known

"Peace Demonstration" on June 11, 1902 ?
Perhaps related to the conclusion of the Second Boer War -
"The last of the Boers surrendered in May, 1902 and the war ended with the Treaty of Vereeniging signed on 31 May 1902."

and see -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petone_Workshops

an interesting link with history !

Morel doesn't give any back ground info to this Petone medal. But that it was a celebration of the end of the Boar war seems very likely.

In 1919 the Addington Workshops in Christchurch New Zealand produced another peace demonstration medal. {Likely using some of the same tooling as the Steam engine is repeated on that second medal} It was produced for the peace demonstration marking the end of the war. However there may have been another motivation ( in 1919) Due to the war industrial action was banned. Its speculation on my part that the "workshos participation in the peace demonstration, in part, was a means to circumvent the laws of the time

So austrokiwi, yours looks like mine. It is obviously not brass but mine does not feel like lead either. Any idea of value?

Looks plated over the brass. That's all I can add. Sorry.

The medallic issues from New Zealand, apart from some notable exceptions, are not overly valuable: Morel does not provide price estimates; My Petone Medal cost me Aussi $130.00 last year. {Yours is in better condition than mine} The Addington medal cost me NZ$75.00.
