I bought a poster on ebay recently, I had asked the seller how much shipping would cost to Canada, and I was told the price would be $14.99. I got an email from the seller today telling me that the poster had been shipped, but the price he quoted was too low. Long story short, the seller wants me to send him another $10 to cover the cost. What would you do in this situation?

I think I would be inclined to not pay the requested $10 you asked for a quote and were given one before you bid. The seller had all the tools available to research shipping costs to Canada. His quote should have been accurate.

I would wait and see how much the postage actually cost (on the package).

I agree with both of the above. With international it can be hard to judge the cost of shipping, but I would wait to see what the postage cost when it gets there. I've been on the other end of that where I had to eat the cost but its entirely up to you if you want to pay more or not.

Looks like the seller didn't do his homework, or just wants an extra 10 bucks. either way you should not be obliged to pay the extra. A quote is a quote is a quote, You paid it and that should be the end of the story.

Quote: I would wait and see how much the postage actually cost (on the package). He sent me an email, with a very low quality picture of the receipt. I can't see a date on it anywhere.

Did you request insurance? as it looks like he has added that in the shipping costs.

This is the email, I received (Which was not through ebay) (Sorry for the Caps, That's the way he sent it) "HI THERE YOUR PACKAGE WAS SENT TODAY YOU WON ON E-BAY. HOWEVER THE SHIPPING CHARGE WAS HIGHER THAN EXPECTED DUE TO THE HEIGHT OF THE BOX I UNDERESTIMATED THE ORIGINAL CHARGE OF $14.99 THE TOTAL WAS $25.80 AND SENT AS PRIORITY MAIL INSTEAD OF FIRST CLASS BECAUSE OF THE HEIGHT AND WIDTH OF BOX. ENCLOSED IS A PHOTO OF THE POST OFFICE RECEIPT IS IT POSSIBLE YOU CAN SEND ANOTHER $10.00 TO COVER THE COSTS I WOULD APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH YOU CAN SEND IT TO MY PAYPAL ADDRESS [Removed Email - For Privacy] AS SERVICES PROVIDED THANKS FEEDBACK WILL BE GIVEN"

I'd probably offer to split the extra charge once the item arrived and appears to be as it was advertised.

Did you get the shipping quote before or after you bid? As a seller, I would never have made that request. (And I have had to eat unexpected high shipping to Canada before... my fault!)

I asked before, because I have bid on things at the last second, and then got an invoice with an outrageous shipping quote.

I can see points being made to support both sides of the argument. I would probably do exactly as following. Wait until the package actually arrives to see what the postage was. If you have tracking info you could probably do research online as to what that corresponds to and how much it should cost to ship to you. I would then refund the seller all the true costs of shipping for any services for what you agreed to. If he was wrong with his quote, fine, but it's the right thing to do. I'm a bit surprised to see some of the responses here stating otherwise, what happened to chivalry. I would not, however, reimburse for anything you didn't ask for like insurance. The real problem is that there remains to be no good, easy, or even safe way to ship any package abroad. I refuse all international traffic selling on ebay. It's not even the costs I want to avoid. The headache just isn't worth it.

Quote: I'm a bit surprised to see some of the responses here stating otherwise, what happened to chivalry. chivalry doesn't come into it. when I bid on the bay for an item and the postage cost for the item is more than just a couple of bucks I figure that cost into my highest bid. Lets look at it this way xx for the item and $15 for postage I look at it and bid my biggest with the postage included. If the postage was $25 I would probably not bid at all. I have sent stuff away and have had to pay quite a lot more than I listed the postage costs at on a few occasions and never sent the buyer begging emails to recover the cost of my own stupidity. Canadian-Banknotes has absolutely NO moral obligation to pay the extra costs, it looks like this seller has snafu'd at the post office and asked for insurance that the buyer didn't ask for anyway. If it was a good friend or family then that is a whole different kettle of fish. This however was a purely business transaction and the rules of business apply. A deal is a deal and if either party screws up , well that's just the way it is. Once the deal is done that is the end of it and it is unethical to change the deal after it has been done. This seller should have just swallowed the extra cost and said nothing ( he wouldn't have come out of it looking like an absolute fool that way)and just wished the buyer to "Have a nice day". IMHO this sellers actions by asking for the extra for postage were discourteous and quite unprofessional.

trout, I really disagree.
If an error occurs during most business transactions and it is traceable, the error IS usually corrected. Banks, Investment firms, corporate finance, etc.
Going beyond that, why would you say chivalry shouldn't come into it. I would also not pay for insurance as that wasn't asked for, but anything else I would help with the real costs just to make it right.
Have you ever tried to ship a package abroad? Maybe this seller was new to it. It's not that easy getting an accurate quote unless you are literally at the post office. Canada-US isn't particularly hard, but in general, it's a headache.
Once again, I want to reiterate that this is why I don't ever ship any package (coins) abroad. Not worth the hassle. With coins, the customs form also screams "steal me."
