How can you tell the Trade dollar is fake? I don't own any old american stuff, what gives it away?

In hand, this coin does not look quite right, because of
a cast appearance instead of a struck coin.

It is 1.2 grams light, enough to make you start to worry on a Trade dollar

Also there are a couple spots, as Bryan1315 posted the Eagles left leg looks like something Megatron would have,
and there is a spot right above "God" in In god we trust
that I think shows it was a cast coin.

When looking at raw Trade dollars, a collector should be looking more for signs of it being a fake coin then any other series.

I was thinking about counterfeiting coins. I would assume the person making the coins would make sure

1. The impression looked appropriate
2. The diameter of the coin was close
3. The weight was close

Everyone would know if the image of a coin was incorrect. Secondly, if you made a quarter the size of a nickel that would be obvious so the counterfeiter would ensure the diameter was nearly correct. Now comes the tricky part the weight. I do believe it would be very difficult to ensure the weight was correct. I think it would be relatively easy to spot a fake by merely weighing the coin.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

the effort and time + planning to arrive to a very nice replica (fake) just doesn't justify the returns.

after all, the ones doing it are just after a quick buck. So with some study on the deatils of a coin, more so its weight, the real can be separated from the fake

bobby131313, I look forward to what CCF may have in store for us on counterfeit coins. I, like GR58 have started collecting them too. I know they're fake when I buy them, and for just a few bucks, I may be able to learn from them.
