I guess if you start watching for fake coins they are quite a few of them to be found. Acquired this one last week 1876 S Trade dollar These last two are pretty crude. Monday I was at a local ladies home, her husband had passed and I was buying his collection. She told me he work in the far east in the 60's and 70's. She thought that these two coins came from there. My recent thoughts are, maybe the best way to learn more about fake coins, is to collect them .. study them ..

I agree completely with the final idea you mentioned, and I think that idea should be the start of something big.
With the proliferation of counterfeits flooding the market these days, it makes sense for us to respond with an organized self-defense. An organized, centralized, informational clearinghouse dedicated to informing the coin, PM and currency purchasing and collecting community about current events in the counterfeiting and forgery world.
I know we have occasional posts and occasional threads about counterfeits in the CCF Forums, but I don't think I've seen anything that's organized and ongoing. Is it here somewhere but I just haven't seen it?
I think we should have a separate "Forgeries and Counterfeits" division of forums with specific forums covering coins, PM's and paper money/notes - for US, world and private mint products. Having a broad-based set of structured, specific forums where we could warehouse current info from around the world along with detailed photos of all the counterfeits and forgeries might be a big project, but it might also be the biggest services to the community yet undertaken.

Quote:What is the metal composition of the fake Trade dollar? I am not sure what the composition is, I guess there is a chance it could be some sort of low grade silver. My recent interest in fake coins, is not that I like them. My experience is that, the best way to know more about a certain coin series is to collect them. I feel that should process should work for fake coins, for me I must learn as much as you can about them, not just hate them and hope they will go away.

GR58, On a recent order, IndianGoldEagle gave me a fake Morgan dollar free (we both new it was fake, so no problem there). Would you like to add it to your fake collection?

It is absolutely necessary to learn how to identify fake coins. One way is to buy them, provided they are sold honestly as fake coins, and share them here with all of us in the CCF, and to show how and why they are fake.
The best way to address and deal with this problem is education.
Most dealers worth their salt have a private 'dark' reference collection, for the education of their employees, so that they may learn to identify any fake coins offered to the business.
That is why I maintain a 'dark' reference collection myself.
You have to beat the fakers at their own game, by using their own products against them.
