That is a beauty. Congrats on the winning bid. What does it grade?

This one is a tough call. I would assume you got a significant discount knowing it had been body-bagged. This is a recent PCGS holder so it's highly likely the coin has been submitted before and body-bagged then also.

If you were to try NGC, I would do it raw (crack it out) and hope for the best. Worse case scenario it ends up in an NGC Details holder and you're only out the grading fees.

Some would try to remove the patina and try it again, but I wouldn't.

It is beautiful! Are you happy with it now that you have it in hand? Hope so and glad you got it for a decent price.

This was one of those "Buy the Coin not the Holder" ordeals. I really like the Dollar and along with the coin, the original (I am guessing) envelope (2 7/8" x 1 3/4") that it was in for who knows how long;

1849-Seated-Dollar---No-Motto---Possible-Replacement

"Description: A well struck, satiny survivor with steel-gray surfaces and a couple of somewhat darker toning streaks evident on the upper left obverse and reverse fields. Free of any large marks or abrasions, with apparently "doctored" surfaces. PCGS# 6936.

From the Elmer C. Welden Collection."

I know this may not hold a whole lot of water;

"...The majority of the Welden Collection was assembled from 1925 through the early 1930s and, prior to being consigned to Stack's Bowers Galleries November 2012 Baltimore Auction, the coins had remained untouched in a Connecticut bank vault since 1973."

As far as doing anything to the coin, other than submitting it through NGC, I would not even attempt to mess with the surfaces, I think that it is beautiful!

Gotcha. I wouldn't either as the coin is quite attractive as is. Being as you bought it knowing it was in a problem holder, the price was fair market retail based on pedigree and eye appeal (looked it up on SB).

If it were mine, a trip to NGC would happen at some point.

This was one of the those "found it on one website (Collectors Corner), which led me to S&B" threw down my bid and forgot about it. I read the description and knew that it was a "details" coin, but I was fixated by it. No regrets...it just kinda throws my "with motto" Seated dollar of a bit due to the difference in detail.

Submitting (raw) through NGC will probably happen after the first of the year.

I will probably wait until early next year to send it in to NGC once I get my ANA membership in gear.
