This coin sold for $50 at an auction I was at today.
The auctioneer said he was told by someone in the audience it was a fake so although it is always buy at your own risk, this coin is double buy at your own risk.
My question is: What is a fake 1804 worth and could this have possibly been the buy of the century for someone?

I'm guessing Amida wants to see the reverse because a "restrike" of the 1804 large cent was made in the 1860s using an 1820 large cent reverse. The obverse, though, used a very rusted and cracked 1803 die, with the last digit altered. This pic doesn't seem to show that cruddiness.

I thought there should be denticles. I dunno.
I do know it's a famously faked coin.

I don't see anything in particular that wrong with it. Even though there is no picture of the reverse, I think this is probably a Half Cent because the bust resembles the Half Cent more than the large cent. $50 might be a good deal for this Half Cent but it is kind of hard to tell because of the lack of a reverse picture and the blurry obverse picture. I do see what might be some scratches in the right obverse field that might reduce the value.

I'm liking the Half Cent idea. At least one variety without a crosslet on the 4 had a high B in LIBERTY. A spiked cent would have clinched it, though! Why would the auction have listed it as a cent?

I concur, Half Cent. Compares to mine almost identically.
P, more than likely a mistake or ignorance.

Well I guess we'll never know. I got to the auction late so I missed the preview.
This is one coin I wanted to look at but it didn't happen.:(

As Doubleagle spotted, the picture is that of a Half Cent.

Looks like the Plain 4 design of the Half Cent. So I'm thinking Half Cent as well. On the flip side, it's still a good deal for $50, looks to be VF. Better photos will tell for sure.
