Spent the day at the Bay State Coin Show with my 7-year-old son. He picked up a few more lower end coins for his 7070 album (as well as a bunch of foreign currency and stamps). I ended up buying mostly U.S. Currency this time around, but I did pick up a few upgrades for my 7070 album as well:

Here is my old Seated Liberty dollar (w/ Motto) that I will eventually gift to my son:

I'll post the currency in the currency forum when I get around to scanning it all in...

Nice pick ups! I was there on Friday. Picked up an 1855 slant 5 large cent. There was a LOT of copper there!

I wasn't able to make the show this time. How was the new venue? I will have to wait now for the next one.

How rude of me! Great looking Seated coins. Are you a member of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club?

The venue was pretty much the same as the previous one in terms of space. Just harder to get to for me (I could take the subway when it was in Boston).

I am not, but I did meet some guy who is associated with the club at the show today. I don't recall if he is the president or just a member, but he was running a booth.

Went by myself on Fri. and went with my son (10) and my nephew (8) today. I was very disappointed. Many dealers but no deals. My son and I brought some excess silver with us to sell or trade in an attempt to trade up in our Panda , Libertad, or Eagle collections. Tried to deal with a couple of dealers myself. Buy Low, Sell High, No interest in trades unless they were obnoxiously one sided in their favor. I let my son approach a couple of dealers on his own to get him into the " wheeling and dealing " process, while I observed in the back ground. This dealer all but dismissed him as a dumb kid.

My son laid out 4 MS69 Pandas and a MS70 Eagle at which point the dealer pointed to the Pandas and said spot to all the Pandas and $35 to the 70 Eagle , then looked up and said " that is all they are worth to me " in essence telling my poor son , with no further explanation, that his collection was worthless melt. As the poor kid gathered up his collection ( and his pride ) I quickly stepped in to rather loudly explain to him that these " dealers " don't care about coins , collectors or trying to foster a new generation of collectors and customers. They care only about max, max, max profit from every transaction. I have been collecting for my whole life. I know it is a business, I am a business man too. But I also know the value of making customers feel important, whether you plan on buying/selling to/from them or not.
There were some nice people there, a dealer's wife knocked $10 off a Unc(AU)1909 VDB penny for my 8 year old nephew. He was thrilled and can't wait to be rich, so he can get his 1909S VDB.

But overall, no deals, few people willing to deal, and a disappointing waste of a Saturday.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, denco7! I don't know if it was the fact that we went the second day (when dealers were perhaps more willing to deal), the fact that we were both offering cash instead of trade, or the fact that we didn't try to strike any particularly hard bargains, but my son and I had a really good time.

My son was mostly looking to fill low-end spots in his 7070 album and kept to the "half off" bins. He managed to find some nice examples, and in every case he offered the dealer less than the asking price and was able to make a deal. I was also able to negotiate with all the dealers I dealt with, although some had prices that were too high for me to even bother asking.

In other news, I did manage to visit the ANACS booth this time around (last year they were off in a side room somewhere and I missed them). I've never submitted anything for grading before, and it was nice having an actual person to talk to instead of just sending stuff through the mail. I ended up submitting five coins that are all outside of my 7070 album, including my 1878 CC Morgan dollar, my 1921 Peace dollar and my 1972 Type 2 Eisenhower.

In addition, I submitted two low grade Barber halves that I got in a $100 FV bag of Barber halves from APMEX last year. One is an 1896O and the other is an 1897O, both semi-key dates and definitely worth the time and money if they grade at G4 or above. The guy was confident that the 1897O would grade at least G4, which would make it worth around $150.
