ACE 250 or ace 350, best you'll get under 500 bucks. I am no pro but I know a few and that what they are recommending to me.

@coppernickeldaddy - what kind of depth will you get from the 250? I have a $100 cheapo detector and I can not hear anything lower than 2 inches unless its a large piece of junk a foot or more down.

I've found coins, bullets, etc in the 6-8 inch range with my Ace 350. Depends on the size of the object, and the type of soil the item is in...

Minelabs, I am told are great units but don't they have a bigger price tag?

Yup. Minelab is an excellent detector but, couple hundred more. I also have the Ace 350 and really like it.

TassieSheDevil to CCF I hope you end up with a MD that meets your needs. Please let this thread know the make, model #, and purchase price of the MD you finally purchase. mdpmedia

Quality does come with it's price tag. But, who says you have to buy new? I paid half price for a thousand dollar detector. You can buy an Explorer used for under $500 if you look hard enough.

Every one has a strong leaning towards one type or another so there will be no unbiased opinions here. All the machines mentioned are good but until you try one out for yourself you are not going to really know which is right for you. this site will help a little http://metaldetectorreviews.net/The best way is to find a shop in your area and try out several models until you find one you like. Detectorists tend to be very brand loyal.

I am a casual metal detector. I bought a Garrett Pro and found it easy to use and seems fairly powerful. Think I paid around $350 for it. It is also useful to know that there are several YouTube videos demonstrating how to use it.

Kurtflorida to the CCF family. You probably are based in Florida from your handle. I personally lived and worked in Orlando,Fl twenty years ago and was scuba diving on a weekly basis in an area called Blue Springs and the Devil's Eye etc. I would often encounter these alarming signs below when entering into certain areas of these caves and often wondered if people were posting these warnings to hide fertile hunting grounds for underwater metal detecting hot spots. Here are some cool snapshots of some of the places cave divers often visit in Central Florida: http://www.backslashonline.com/inde...g&Itemid=186At the time of my diving escapades metal detecting was never one of my endeavors. I am curious, however, if you are aware of any MD being performed in or near these popular fresh water cave diving sites? If I can make it to the next coin show in Orlando, I would also love to MD in some of these caves if the government permits it. I could imagine pirates (ever heard of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl...?) or just common thugs hiding precious metals in these obscure underwater hiding places but have never researched it much. mdpmedia
