Hi idilium
Im sure in orange county you will find places where metal detecting in allowed ,, although I have no experiance in CA at all as far as restrictions and laws are concerned ,, I know that a great number of Guys that live there find many places .
You need to research your area ask around a bit , maybe even find a local MD'ing club to join up with.
Keep us posted on what you find out ,,a person never knows when He might end up in CA and the info will be useful !!

Hi idillium and welcome to the forum! Plenty for friendly folks here, all willing to share their experiences and expertise.
Be very careful about making presumptions about regulations. Just because a specific activity is not mentioned in the regs does not mean it's not prohibited through another regulation, e.g., "Park grounds are not to be disturbed." covers a wide variety of activities. Be safe: ask the park administration if metal detecting is permitted before taking your machine out of the trunk. Also, if it's a city park, some activities are covered under other non-park city, county, and/or state regulations, e.g., public health and safety, historic preservation and conservation, various environmental regs.
Once you get the go-ahead from the proper officials, enjoy! Some of the members of the forum have made some incredible finds.

If you are not far from the beach I would recommend looking at a good beach detector. Maybe a Whites Surf PI or a Minelab Excaliber or some other machine that does well on the beach's. The beaches near you I would say see a lot of people and a lot of stuff gets lost. Most of the finds will not be old, but the chance of some good jewelry will be higher. Good luck, BenVA

I started out with a ace 250 and was not dissapointed I found some excellent things including some mid 1800 coins, for the money (200)it is likley the best out there, and eguall to some machines in the 400-500 dollar range, I have since moved up to the Minlabe SE. As far as sights a history book of your county will provide many clues, and mine has lead me to some unhunted forgoten sights. I use the sight treasure net for much valuble detecting info and encouragment. I hope that helps T.C.

idilium, I would recommend the Sovereign GT if you intend to mostly hunt the beaches. I used a Sovereign at the beach a few years ago when I had one. It does very good and you do not get the false signals from the wet sand like you will with other detector's. If you don't intend on hunting the beach much I would suggest the Garrett Ace 250. I would say that if you use the Ace 250 at the beach you would need to steer clear of the wet sand. The problem with this is that is where the good stuff is a lot of the time. I guess you would need to decide which you will prefer to hunt. The Ace 250 in my opinion will be easier to use inland. The Sovereign will take a little more time to learn. You may want to consider starting with the Ace 250 and move up later. You might want to see if you will like metal detecting before sinking much money into it. BenVA
