Just in case I didn't spend enough money on currency at the coins show over the weekend, I stopped by my local coin shop over lunch today. Turns out he had just purchased a collection of bills, both large and small, and said I could have first look at them (he hadn't even priced them yet). Most of them were bills I either already had or ones that were out of my budget, but I did manage to get three of them. The first was a Series 1935A WWII Hawaii One Dollar Emergency Note in really nice condition. I actually just got one of these at the coin show, but this one was in so much better condition that I couldn't pass it up for $100: [I'll probably give the other one to my son for Christmas.] Next up is a Series 1922 $20 Gold Certificate in so-so condition that I got for $150: [I was originally planning on getting a Series 1906 for my "type set" album, but the two series are basically equivalent.] Finally, I snagged a really nice Series 1918 One Dollar Federal Reserve Bank Note (Boston, Massachusetts) for only $90: He also had a Series 1934A WWII Hawaii Ten Dollar Emergency Note in nearly uncirculated condition for $150, but that will have to wait for another day (assuming he still has it, of course).

Quote: Love the Hawaii Note! Me, too! I only had a certain amount of cash on hand (the guy prefers cash to credit cards) and it was a choice between the $1 Hawaii and the $10 Hawaii in poorer condition. Even though I just bought a $1 Hawaii over the weekend and need a $10 Hawaii for my collection, I just couldn't pass it up in that condition. I did waffle back and forth for awhile before deciding, but I think I made the right choice.

Quote: What is crazy though,is how it looks like two differrent notes in the picture...? I think it's just the way it was folded. I suspect it was folded only once and only in one direction (as opposed to back and forth), so the fold only shows up when viewing the reverse.

That Boston one is really nice, I just have a thing for eagles on notes.

Barryg...do not know much about these notes from a value stand point....but I do see some issues with the Boston $1.
The note looks questionable (obv vs rev)

I know what you're referring to, Ceylon62, but the folds actually are visible on the obverse as well. Due to the way it was folded, though, the folds are not as obvious on the front and the scanner just didn't pick them up very well.

Some really good looking notes. Its always important to look on the back of the note. I'm guessing most people fold their notes towards the reverse, thus the marks are usually more distinguished on that side.

Those are some pretty nice notes. What condition is the Hawaii note in? If it is AU+ that looks like a pretty good deal!
On the Gold certificate I think I would have passed on that note. Does it have a tear on the bottom? I think you might have over paid for that one.
