I was thinking of getting some coins from Biblical times, especially ones that are actually mentioned in the text. I thought it would be kind of cool but I know very little of ancients and have very few in my possession.
I'm not trying to break the bank, so I guess a price range of different thing would be nice. I have looked around a bit, but then when looking at some replicas I thought "Well, I could tell that was a replica because it was really symmetrical... but I'm sure there are fakes MADE to look real"
And then thought.... TO CFF! Where all the greatest minds on coins gather!
Any advice and info on this would be great! Thanks guys!

"Biblical coins" are an extremely popular branch of ancients collecting, a fact which has three significant corollaries: - Genuine "biblical coins" are much more expensive than "non-biblical" coins that are equally rare, beautiful and historically significant. Denarii of Tiberius are among the most common Roman denarii of the 1st century, but because they are also the famous "tribute penny", they are also among the most expensive. - Ancient coins that have only a very slim association with being "biblical" are often hyped up as biblical by less-than-scrupulous sellers. I recently purchased a denarius of Vespasian (circa 71 AD) that had "Roman coins of Bible times" printed all over the flip insert. Sorry, guys, but Vespasian isn't really a "biblical" emperor. The only link is that Vespasian crushed the First Jewish Revolt and issued some "JVDAEA CAPTA" coins to commemorate that event, but the coin I bought wasn't a JVDAEA CAPTA. - Fake "biblical coins" are typically more commonly encountered than fake non-biblical types. Some are even mass-produced and sold in bulk through religious supplies stores, so that well-meaning pastors and Sunday School teachers can give one away to everybody. The standard reference work for the series is "Guide to Biblical Coins" by David Hendin; the fifth edition came out in 2010. Equally valuable for newbies to ancients collecting is " Not Kosher", his guide to spotting and avoiding Biblical-era fakes.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I'd agree a good book on the subject could save you money when you start to purchase, too many 'chancers' just add the words 'biblical' and 'christian' to their listings to try and bump the price up when the coin has little or nothing to do with the subject.
Its a shame the book is so expensive, not sure how different the earlier editions are but they seem to be priced a little better:

I'm not in the slightest bit religious but finding references in contemporary works is fascinating and I think it really adds to the interest in the coins.

...Broseph... Some of the Ancients not mention, that are inexpensive, look at Byzanetine Anonymous, like my Avatar. Christ seated holding Gospels..More Christian then Biblical...Also there are Prutah's (Pontius Plate, Herod l, Archelaus) which were when Christ walked the Earth. Vcoins.com is a good place to start.Good luck, and if you buy we would love to see what you picked out...
