Is this PMD or the real deal? I'm not sure how to put this into words so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

I believe that your coin was struck on a planchet with a ragged edge, possibly punched from the end of the metal stock sheet. The reverse shows a significant delamination and there is a small Blakesley Effect opposite the void @AMERICA, proving that the planchet was damaged before the coin was struck. Also notice that the obverse rim is tapered and not fully struck on the gouge @the Y in LIBERTY, another sign of a pre-strike event. I find it amazing that it has escaped the melting pot over the years since many would think upon first glance that it was just PMD. Definitely an ugly error but quite unique

I thought it was PMD when I first saw it...but you are right. That is one messed up planchet!

biokenist6,

Thank you.

I noticed the (what I thought was) damaged dime and put it aside to examine later. With the naked eye it looks like PMD. At least with my 52 year old naked eyes. I noticed the delamination on the reverse and was hoping that's what I was actually seeing. You know the old story: You own it, it's junk. I own it and it's a blue ribbon winner. I try to be a little more conservative until I get other opinions. Still new at this. Thanks again.

The only thing that kept me from commenting initially was the S in e pluribus unim. I did miss the blakesly effect. Nice to know my eye is improving.

BTW, the obverse may be rough but the reverse is rockin'
Rest in Peace

biokemist6 Thanks for showing up to teach.

I thought it was PMD until I saw the rim photos...then I had to take a closer look -- still couldn't figure it out.

Nice find!

At first glance I would say PMD, but after looking at the overall obverse that I noticed the I in liberty also exhibit the flat Denticle that normally shows up on the opposite of a clip.

Plus the Delamination as mentioned by bios proven it to be a genuine error coin, too bad that its well circulated. A good find though.
