My mother-in-law has this coin, we are going to send it out for grading. What grade do you think it is, or more importantly - is it real or counterfeit? Thanks!

I will wait for the graders to let us know. Good that your sending it in as the chinese and other groups are making fakes of everything

these are highly counterfeited, I am no expert on these like Johnny is but I do not see anything that is throwing any red flags at me about it

I'd say it's almost certainly been cleaned, so take that into consideration when choosing a TPG. If you want a grade, you might have to ask for it. If you're just after authenticity, you may be able to save yourself a buck or two? Beautiful coin nonetheless!

Looks good to me. It's probably genuine but has been cleaned/polished which normally hurts numismatic value. $3 Gold pieces have about $250 of gold in them and your coin might be worth $500 or so once confirmed genuine.
Problem-free this is a $2,000 coin so you can see how much cleaning/polishing hurts.
P.S. I'd grade it XF Details Improperly Cleaned.

I am not seeing anything that is making me believe it's a counterfeit. I am sort of on the fence between AU-53 and 55 but with a slight lean towards AU-55. I would submit this to either PCGS, NGC, and ANACS with PCGS being preferred because of it's tendency to bring a higher resale value if the coin needs to be sold. You could be looking in the neighborhood of $3000-3500 if it deemed genuine and grades AU-53/55. Good luck with the submission! Beautiful coin BTW!

Heritage sales show prices anywhere from $500 to $1500+ for AU examples with problems. Original, problem-free AU examples start around $3000 and go up from there.
This coin absolutely needs to be certified, with PCGS being my first choice. If genuine, they will give it a details grade along with a defect description.

Here's an update on this coin. Just got it back from PCGS, and they graded it AU58 http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/26847456.htmlNow to show it to the guy at the local coin shop who told me it wasn't worth grading because he was 95% sure it was counterfeit!

HA! You win. I love these stories. You now have a coin whose worth exceeds $4000. Shove it up the nose of the guy at the coin shop. And, should you ever choose to liquidate, it needs to go to one of the major coin auction houses. Anything else would be leaving money on the table.

What a terrific result. The images did show some field hairlines and apparently dull luster which suggested a cleaning. However, PCGS decided it was a righteous, market-acceptable piece, so congratulations! BTW, original mintage for the 1883 was just 989 pieces. Pretty awesome that your mother-in-law had this piece. Does she happen to have any other treasures stashed away?

Congrats that coin is beautiful! Let us all know what the coin shop owner says when you take it in to show him. Great coin and even better that it came from your family.

There are not enough dancing fruit on the planet to show how happy I am to see the "it's been cleaned" and "it's probably counterfeit" doomsayers proven wrong. Thank you for the follow up.
