Interesting article I just came across concerning our old $1000 bills. Over 12 years after they were withdrawn, almost a million of the $1000 bills remain in circulation. They are used by organized crime as a way of payment. Of course, that was the reason the $1000 bill was withdrawn in the first place, but I guess they can't compel gangsters to turn in their $1000 bills! I'm sure a few are held by CCF members (for collecting purposes, not drug trafficking of course!)

I also think counterfeiting was a big reason too. From what I understand, hundreds are more the gangster thing.

Interesting article. Never did understand the day-to-day use of a bill like that, seems it's designed specifically for nefarious uses.

No the bird series bank notes did not have watermarks. Watermarks were first introduced with the journey series that we are currently transitioning out of.

its been about 15 years since I've seen one in a retail transaction, before that I used to get them once a month or so. not from 'criminals' but from regular people who didnt use credit cards (back before debit cards, which wasnt that long ago, cash was king).

even today there is still an entire subset of the population who live 100% 'off the grid' when it comes finances. they learn where to shop and who to deal with and save a minimum 12% on every purchase + about 40% on their income. everything is cheaper because the dollars stretch a lot further. 'criminal' in a sense that they don't pay taxes but not necessarily criminal as in drug dealing / organized crime etc.

Working in the construction industry in the 80's and 90's it was common to have accounts paid with $1000 bills. We did however keep track of who gave them, and which account they were applied to. Just in case, it came back from the bank as a fake bill.

I had them given to me on the casino tables 20 years ago.. Predating a better system, we had to keep count of how much money went into the drop box with a clicker - one click per $20.. let's just say a $5000 buy-in kept a supervisor busy for about 5 minutes..
