these are two Irish coins I've just bought here are what I think are the lettering of the coin. The person who I bought these of said he found them METAL DETECTING about 10 years ago in NORFOLK(England)
why were Irish coins in England?
C.A.R.O.D.G.N.A.G.B.R.I
the other side
f.r.a.E.T.H.I.B.R.E.X
My questions are
Are these real?
which monarch has these?
the date ?
And if you know what they are worth that would be a bonus!
Thanks (i have one of these already but it is slightly smaller an some of the lettering is different)

Hi.

It looks like a Charles I Farthing 1625-1649, I'm sure an expert will date precisely.

I believe what you have are known as 'Armstrong Farthings'. This link will show you more detailed images as well as provide you with the history of your coins:-

Hi.

Still think its a Charles I Richmond http://www.britishfarthings.com/Roy...0189__0.html

The Armstrong farthings seem to have CAROLVS II

Bottom One is a Rose farthing Charles I. In answer to why they were in England, well, People do tend to travel. You Could also ask why an english Monarch ruled Ireland lol

It isn't a rose farthing as it has a harp on it .
The English ruled Ireland because of there greedy kings and queens.

yes - it's not a rose farthing. (the bottom coin seems to be two obverses?).
It's a Maltravers issue I think, which means it was issued sometime after 1634.
There are three types all of which have differing legends.
yours I think is CAROLUS DG MAG BRI and FRA ET HIB REX which is the more scarce type of the three. The CARO should be over IACO I think on this type.

There is a bit more on Tony Clayton's site here,
http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/farth.html
Despite the harp I think these were general English issues.

Based on the letters given by John I still think it is a Richmond issue http://www.britishfarthings.com/Roy...0189__0.html

whoops...
I never realised the Oval issue Maltravers has the same legend as the Richmond one before (not sure why I typed CAROLUS up thread, it should have been CARO) - the legend starts at the top on the Richmond issue, the bottom on the Maltravers one.
Apologies to Rooneydog as he has this right all along.
