Hello, CCF! I haven't posted in a while, but I have a question. I have been collecting cheap Morgans for a few years now, and I started collecting proof Silver Eagles recently, and I have several of those now. My Morgan collection is at the point where I want to pick up a few CC dates for my Dansco, but I also want to get some new ASE proofs, and lets say that my budget isn't exactly on the large side. My question is this: which of these series is better to collect for a collector on a budget?

With ASE being tied so closely to silver prices (there is a little relief because you said you are buying proofs), their value will be in flux for years to come. CC Morgans have been and most likely be always a favorite for collectors, and therefore, retain their value. Most likely the CCs will continue to gain value. History vs. Shiney and New. Can't go wrong.

If youre referring to which series will be more valuable going forward really thats anyones guess. Both have a lot that were made and the ASEs from the 80s still arent bringing very large premiums compared to the newer ones from what I've seen. Other than the 1995-w the ASEs will be cheaper than CC morgans but its always nice to complete a set.
If you like both you could do both over time and just get whatever ones you can find the best deals when you can. Prices in general are down right now with the economy so it could be a good time to grab some of the CC morgans too. My answer probably didnt help but I'm going to post it anyway lol

get ASEs since they are easy to sell. Get CC's because you like them.

Me personally, I would rather get CCs for the history, ASEs can get gotten anytime but sooner or later, CCs will be rarer and rarer

Quote: sooner or later, CCs will be rarer and rarer That holds true for every coin after all. As stated, the ASE's do not have the premium (for the most part) that CC Morgans do. Who knows if ASE premiums will shoot up or not? If it is PURELY an investment issue, the CC's would be my advice. IF you can get a good deal on them. As long as civilization remains in place as is, CC Morgans will continue to be coveted by collectors. The odds of their premium continuing to rise are good. Now, the ASE's. The proofs hold a premium, but not a huge one. They are an investment also, but it will take time for the premiums to out strip the silver value in the coin. Common date Morgans in lower grades like VF are actually worth less than most of the proof ASE's if for no other reason than Morgans are only 90% silver vs the ASE's at 99.9% Over all though I would say mix it up as much as you can. Of the CC's, you may be able to find 82-84 and 90&91 around 100 in VF if you get lucky. Any others aside from those five dates are going to run a good bit more. So work on those 5, then turn towards the ASE's.

My thoughts ran along the same lines at one time. However, the Morgans have it hands down in beauty and history. I went with Morgans and am glad of it. It's a great feeling to hold a CC Morgan--"Back away and put your hands in the air, pardner. Don't do anything stupid."

Thanks everyone! I'm probably going to buy a few of each over time, but focusing on Morgans. And oh yeah, i' m gonna do what blackjack said whenever I feel the urge to buy an overpriced ASE!!
