Hello everyone, I'm very new to bullion investing and I have 1986 and 1991 American Silver Eagles. I have seen ASEs for ~$500, and by no means am I saying these are worth anywhere near that, which are graded "9.5" or something along those lines.

My first question is if you have a mint ASE and it is still in the case from the mint, wouldn't they all grade 9+ which raises the premium?

My second, I am not looking for coins that have collectors value or premiums and am just looking to acquire as much silver as possible. Do these two coins I have carry a premium? If so, what would be a reasonable price for them?

Any response would be greatly appreciated and if what I said made absolutely no sense feel free to set the record straight. Thanks!

The coin that you're showing is a proof coin. The 1986 was the first year for ASE, so it will carry a premium. There are ASE in uncirculated condition and even a bullion version that's even cheaper. Or you can simply get silver rounds from a private mint that will be fairly close to melt value, if your only looking to own silver.

Thanks for the reply. I am not really interested in coins with premiums or collectors value and was hoping to sell this coin and purchase a larger amount of silver.

I would keep it and just add to your collection, even if you are just looking for bullion it doesn't hurt if you have some items that carry a premium over spot.

The 1986 proof you have sells for $55-60. It has the highest mintage numbers of all the proofs (1.4 million)

The 1991 proof sells for a bit more ($60-70) and had a mintage of 511,000

For reference... grading is on a scale of 01-70 with PF (or MS)70 being the highest

As was mentioned in the previous posts if you are looking to invest in silver bullion then stick to either bullion Silver Eagles (MS ASE's with no mint mark), generic rounds or 1-5-10 ounce bars. There will be a numismatic premium added for collector ASE's (proofs) and they are not true silver plays...

I collect (invest in) both and love the proofs but my main holdings are in silver bullion bars, 5 ounce ATB bullion and ASE's.
