I do not want to turn this into a debate on ethics or how you feel about Mr Carr but more on the coins being offered at the Liberty Seated Coin Club. These coins are commissioned for their 40th Anniversary. I was introduced to these coins on this forum and really like the look. The link shows the 2 silver coins offered. The coins are sold at (approximately) 50 percent over spot. It appears that Mr Carr's coins can do very well and have a strong following. He's kind of like the Andy Warhol of coin production. Mintage on these will be low. What are your opinions of these coins? Thanks guys.

As I'd mentioned before, I think they're simply gorgeous. And there's ample evidence to indicate the existence of a collector base for Mr. Carr's work, including results from my own personal sales.

There are those that don't like him and then there are those that are fans.

mkman123,

This is what I wanted to avoid. I wanted opinions on the coins, not the man.

I see no problem at all with these LSCC medals. They are no different than any other private bullion round. I rather like them.

They sure are nice. Proof or Unc? I am not a huge fan of proofs but that is stunning.

Even though they aren't something I'd be interested in I can see the appeal. It's a nice design.

Respecting mds' wishes to leave the polarizing debate out of the discussion, I think the appearance of the medal is beautiful. I hope the actual medals are as eye-appealing in hand as they look on the website.

Setting aside my opinion of him and what he does he does come up with some nice designs. I like the uncir version of that, a RP would have been great too

They come in two flavors. Proof or satin finish. If you want a gold one, you have to be a member and submit your own gold round with an extra 150. I like them all.

I think I know what I want for Christmas. The deadline for ordering is no later than November 30th. Unfortunately, delivery isn't until sometime in 2013.

I have nothing against the medals, they look good and typical D Carr work. My only comment would be to try a different font for the lettering. The one used is too small and doesn't have the right time period feel for the artwork.

Makes sense. My concerns are the coin has no markings for metal content and I don't believe there is any of Mr. Carr's initials on the coin.

My Krugerrand is packed, the check written out, and Post Office this Friday.
I had the chance to examine a prototype struck in bronze this past May at the NH Coin Expo. Then and there I wrote out a check just for the opportunity to order the medal in gold.

In the photo below, I have indicated the location the location of both Dan Carr's initials and the initials of the LSCC. Look directly under my letters.

I cannot speak to the silver examples, but all gold examples will have the designation .999 on the edge along with the member's ID number. A choice is also given if you want your name also included on the edge. I DO!

What a fitting tribute to my father, who gave me an interest in coins!

Mintage projections are at a stand-still due to many new people requesting membership. Interest appears to be strong.

What else? Oh yes. A prototype of the gold proved to be unsatisfactory. The newer example will be of a reduced diameter and thicker. A good thing, as it eliminates a gold plated example of a silver being passed as gold. "About the size of an American Gold Eagle"

A question was raised: "Why not have PCGS slab them?"
Simple answer, "Wrong size to fit." Thus custom slabs.

If you like 'em, get 'em while they last.

Condor,
I just checked the Red Book. The original Gobrecht dollar (1836) had no letters on the obverse.
Stars were added in 1838.
On the reverse, there is no need for United States of America nor One Dollar. It is a medal after all. Not a restrike.

So, lettering is a judgement call upon the part of DC.

Oh, and since I do not know his work, I have no opinion about the gentleman.
