from APMEX site: The 2013 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf boasts a brand new micro-engraved visual security feature so you can buy Canada's flagship bullion coin with even more confidence than before! I guess silver maple leaf may have the same feature, it's not hard or expensive to make, it already appears on loonies and toonies

That's cool, I am planning on buying a couple world 1 oz gold coins this coming year.

It's certainly no more obtrusive than a privy marked coin. I'm not seeing a downside here unless the "micro engraved" feature proves easy for the bad guys to duplicate.

but one doesn't have to buy a privy marked coin. Sets of GMLs are now going to look awfully odd now with 2013 in the mix.

I see your point. From a collectors perspective it would have been nice had RCM found a way to incorporate the micro engraving feature into the existing design.

Thanks for the link Fuzzy. I am on the fence on this one, it's great technology, but does kind of detract from the rest of the line.

I expect that these security features will become the new norm. But I believe there may be a little more to this. The RCM is profit oriented. Besides bullion, NCLT and circulation coinage for Canada, the RCM produces coins for nations around the world. What better way to advertise this technology to the world, than to display it on the popular Gold Maple. I'd buy these if I could, but I'm on a silver budget ;)

Sounds interesting! But can someone boil it down for me...why is this such an impressive security feature? I don't see anything on the APMEX image that says "That looks hard for a counterfeiter to replicate."

micro-engraving, need very specific machinery to replicate. Can't just take a mold of this one to copy the die

Yuck. I am completely against changing these designs in the name of anti-counterfeiting. Caveat Emptor.
