I was about to take a hammer to my flatbed scanner and I pushed the button once more to humor myself and it is alive once again!

Here's a Morgan 1878-S I acquired. The obverse has rather large scratches on the bottom left and a small indention just below the date. The reverse is almost perfect. I have no idea how to grade this with the scratches.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Graceoutcast,
It's hard to tell from the scan, but your dollar looks mint state in terms of wear. A reverse image would be helpful so we could see if the eagle breast feathers are full. The scan doesn't seem to show any luster but that could be a limitation of the equipment.
The rim bump by the date is fairly minor but the scratches look pretty severe. Obverse marks are usually more detrimental to a coin's value than reverse marks. With these scratches your dollar would likely be "net graded" to the value of an AU coin.

The coin has some nice shine to it actually. My scanner might be alive but it sure is decrepit.

Wait...no...it's dead again

Well anyways here's the reverse

And a close up of the scratches. Looking straight at it, it's not that bad. But a side shot....

Nice Morgan. Depending on the pics, I can't see any wear, but IMHO I only go 61/62. Still, a pretty nice Morgan. Good luck with your scanner!

I don't have a pricing guide for that error yet. I mainly just collect Foreign

Any estimates of it's worth based on the pics? And the coin has far more luster then what I can portray in the pics

thanks

Your new pictures show a very nice BU, common-date Morgan dollar which has unfortunately been significantly damaged. Without these scratches it might be graded MS-63 and be worth $40 or so. As is, I think a value of maybe $15 would be more realistic.
