I was brought to this forum by a search for Littleton Coin. I've already ordered one thing from them and am waiting for it to arrive. I've seen a second deal of theirs: 20 Presidential dollars for $20. It seems like a good deal to me; a direct exchange. Am I getting scammed somehow? I do intend to call immediately when I receive my first order and be removed from their "coins on approval" program.

I'd like to add that I'm not really a "serious" collector. This was actually my first purchase of coins for collecting. Everything else I've found. I really just do this for fun.

Littleton Coin Co is a very reputable mail-order company and has been in business for decades. However, because they are a very large retail mail-order business that advertises on a national scale, they have high overhead costs so their prices on coins tend to be fairly high. They do very well with their teaser ads for new customers, those are usually something resembling a bargain. Once you make that first purchase, you are on their mailing list and you will get some of the Coins-On-Approval with your first order. The initial return postage is free but if you continue to receive the COA, you will have to pay for the return shipping yourself.

Littleton filled a need for many collectors in the pre-internet days, especially if you lived in a rural area with no coin shows. I used to purchase some coins from Littleton as a kid in the 1980s. At the time, their prices were a bit higher than RedBook values but the nearest coin shows and stores were 50 miles away so I paid for the convenience of mail delivery. Nowadays, their target audiences are noncollectors, collectors new to the hobby, and older collectors that do not want to buy coins online.

Littleton has some good "introductory" offers (like the Presidential dollar offer you mentioned), but if you don't want their Coins On Approval offers, just state so on the return invoice and they will stop.

I've actually found a bunch of good introductory offers. In addition to that Presidential dollar offer, I see one for all State Quarters, and one for the new national park quarters. And at face value, I can just use them as regular money if I really need to.

Thanks for your help (all of you).

Of course you do it for fun! If you do not enjoy something, it is not worth doing. Now, not sure if the same applies for work or not, but it definitely does for hobbies.

Do you ever search through rolls of coins? I found some nice early 1940-ish nickels in just $20 of nickels, so it can return old coins for no cost to you, as you get them for face value. Any coin rolls should be good to look through. My bank won't get half dollars unless someone orders $1000 worth of them, so I was thinking about it...never know what you might find!

Oh, and to CCF!

I think that can be applied to just about everyone with coins. Even most dealers are collectors themselves and get to kill two birds with 1 stone running coin shops.

But like everyone else said littleton does have some good introduction deals. There other stuff seems to be priced high but they do have a good selection. If nothing else browse around the site and see what type of stuff you like

Actually, my wife used to work at a bank, so she was able to order lots of coin rolls. I actually found a Mercury dime once, along with a few pre-'65 quarters. I could never see myself paying above face value for any coins (other than the 2009 Lincoln Penny proof set I'm hoping for).

I looked at that Morgan dollar offer, but I happen to have a couple already. Cleared out my 100-year-old aunt's dressers and found them, along with some Peace dollars and some gold coins.

I just got my Presidential dollars and the free shield pennies. This was a great deal! Where do I find the National Park quarters and other deals. Can we have a link, baysinger?

I am particularly excited about the 1982 90% silver George Washington commemorative proof. Spot on that coin is about $12 and you get it for only $9.95

You should try the Search tab at the top. Type in Littleton. Might find some interesting things about that place. One thing is they are excessively overpriced. And that send stuff without you wanting it should be a real no, no.

Hello and ! I use Littleton due to where I live right now. I love getting their packages in the mail. The prices are a bit steep, but their quality seems to be above average IMO.
