So, I recently bought some German banknotes from the 1930's and I noticed that the serial number length isn't consistent. I bought a 10 (P-180), 20 (P-181), 50 (P-182) and 100 mark (P-183). On the 10 and the 20, the serial is a letter followed by eight numbers. And the 50 and the 100, the serial is a letter followed by seven numbers.

This variation isn't mentioned in the Krause catalog but some of the images in it have this variation. My guess is that the German mint prints lower serial numbers just as the number (like A - 3567 instead of A - 00003567). Anyone have any idea?

This type of variation also happens on some notes from Equatorial Guinea - some notes have 6 and 7 digit solid serial numbers

In the catalogue the 50 and 100 (P182 and 183) is mentioned as having 7 or 8 digit numbers.

Just had a look at some other sites and looks like the earlier ones started with a lower number of digits. Then when the prefix letters ran out they went back to A and added an extra digit to the serial#.

But then again I could be wrong.

The Pick catalog does not list all the varieties for this note. I will post the information from the Rosenberg catalog this weekend when I get a chance.
