I had a ton of fun with the last Who am I? Figure I would do it again... This guy purchased by Ancientnoob... c.AD Obv. The guy! Rev. 2 Guys and something... 3.79g x 24.5mm Who am I? The hints! I lived after Jesus, but I was not a Christian, I favored one God over others, but I was a Polytheist. I was a powerful and enlightened ruler, the people of my land lived in relative comfort. My reign was the start of a period of great advancement in art, science and literature. In the modern era major art works still exist commemorating the high points of my reign. Most scholars conclude that the accounts of the events of my life are still better told by my people. I defeated the Roman Empire numerous times, both in battle and in diplomacy. My famous father, chose me to succeed him because I was the smartest, gentlest, bravest and most well spoken of his sons. During my reign, I imported a one of kind footstool and mantel piece. Who am I? When did I live? Where am I from? Edited by Ancientnoob 11/21/2012 11:53 am

Hey Gil - he not only used him as a footstool. When he died he had him stuffed and kept in a Zoroastrian temple! Gordian III broke his thigh when he was thrown from his horse while in battle against Shapur and Philip shamefully made a treaty with him and high tailed it back to the Roman Frontier. He would betray the treaty and attempt to invade again, only to be killed by his men. Valerian I think got the really short end of the stick in this conflict.

Those were shameful days for the Roman Empire. lol
On the other hand, great days for the Persian Empire.

Lay this coin next to a Valerian and tell me which was the world power of the day. Of course it depends on how bad a Valerian you choose but Shapur is pretty regularly an impressively made coin that makes the Great King look Great.

According to Alraric Watson in Aurelian and the Third Century..."Shaphur is said to have used the captive emperor (valerian) as a human mounting block...Valerian died in miserable servitude, he was flayed and his skin, dyed crimson, was hung in the temple at Ctesiphon." BTW, nice coin:) Cool guessing threads:)!
