Whilst browsing through a bunch of Carthage coins on offer I noticed the following coin amongst them. I didn't recall having seen one before and so bought it on a gut feel that it was scarce. I hadn't bought a Maxentius since 2004 and now I have bought two in two months.

The only example that I have been able to find online is the one on wildwinds which sold in 2001.

MAXENTIUS, as Caesar. Æ Follis
Obv:- M AVR MAXENTIVS NOB CAES, Laureate head right
Rev:- SALVIS AVGG ET CAES FEL KART, Carthage standing facing, head left, holding up fruits in both hands
Struck in Carthage late 306 A.D. H in left field, Greek_Delta in exe.
References:- RIC VI Carthage 51a.

I believe (quite possibly wrongly) that this is the only time at which Maxentius is referred to as Caesar on bronze coins after his revolt in Rome and before his elevation to Priceps Invictus.

The coin is on a full flan, well centered, with a decent strike and the reverse still holds on to decent detail enhanced by a nice patina.

Maxentius,-Salvis-Avgg-Et-Caes-Fel-Kart

That's definitely a nice Carthago coin and struck on a larger flan, apparently. I wonder what the size and weight is.

And yeah, I don't have a Carthago coin yet but maybe in the future I will.

Not the most commonly seen indeed. There's a few others online I just saw, but I do not remember seeing one actually for sale. I'm always on the lookout for these Carthage reverse folles, which I find lovely. An excellent purchase

I recently posted here a decent looking FEL KART of Maximinus II and have seen several more in various locations that suggest that there has been a recent hoard put on the market. The way these things usually work is that they are seen commonly for a month or a year and then they drop off as the surplus gets sucked up by wholesale channels. It does appear that this might be a good time to search for what fits your desires in the way of Maxentius and co-rulers as well as Carthage folles. They may be cheap or not but they are available and it is easier to buy something that exists in the stock of several dealers.

The dealer I bought this from has bought a large lot through a major UK auction house. The lot comprised an old(ish - 1960s) collection of folles with a range of Carthage coin. This Maxentius went un-noticed by the dealer as being anything different to the other emperors.
