Hi all, my half-brother was doing some metal detecting in the woods the other day in eastern Montreal, Canada, and he stumbled upon this button. He claims it's made of tin and after doing some research he believes it was made between the end of the 1700's and the beginning of the 1800's.

Is this information accurate ?

Are you sure it's tin? Looks like oxidized brass. I've dug hundreds of these 'one piece' buttons here in Virginia. We refer to them as 'flower buttons.' I realize there is no flower but many had flower patterns. I've also dug ones that looked like a Chinese Checker Board, spiral patterns and numerous other designs. Probably dates back to the early 1800s to 1850's. Could be earlier too but many of the very early buttons had a 'bird cage' shank or 'turret' shank. Too bad it wasn't military.

My bad. 'Bird Cage' shanks are later. Like I said in the other post, the 'Turret' backs are earlier buttons. If I have the time I can post one of the French buttons I dug in Lightfoot, Virginia. It was from the period of the Yorktown campaign circa 1781. These buttons have the turret style backs. We found some very nice pieces that day.
