I bought this coin with a few others for a plumber I know who has an interest in ancient coins. (actually I owe him for a favor).

Anyone have any interesting facts about this reverse type.

I paid 5.00 US for it, 1.25 shipping. Is it worth this much?

Thanks in advance.

It is really very blue.

It's a very nice coin and worth what you paid. I believe it's RIC VII Siscia 159

Thanks echizento,

I haven't attributed any of the group yet but it's time I got it done and give my friend the coins with some info along with them.

VOT XX roughly translates to mean that Constantine swears an oth to act in a proper manner as emperor for a period of 20 years. Usually we see such coins updated as they approach the given anniversary so you will find X up to ten years and the number raised as they went past 10 and started toward 20 or 30. They were not consistent on how this was done so you see some XV for 15 and sometimes it seems the number is just wrong. Young rulers are more likely to have V and X and there are XXXX for Constantius II who ruled long enough that that was appropriate. The outer reverse legend dedicates the coin to Our Lord Constantine the Great. This is a very common coin and a decent looking example easily worth the price. Be sure to point out to your plumber just who Constantine was in case he does not know the name. Many Christians have heard of him through church (he is even a saint in the Eastern Orthodox church but not to Roman Catholics). It is an excellent choice as a first ancient coin for a non-collector.

I'd fix your garbage disposal for that coin! I would happy to have such an example nice obverse with strong legends. Kudos!

Nothing wrong with budget style and certainly nothing wrong with this coin

It might not have perfect surfaces but its centered well and the full legends and mintmark can be easily read. Its the kind of coin I tend to buy quality wise, fully attributable but 'imperfect' enough to bring the cost down to the price of a beer and a packet of chips, to be honest I like a bit of honest wear on a coin

Excellent purchase would be an understatement, IMHO.

Any Vcoin store or FAC is charging $20 minimum for this common VOT and I don't think we really need to pay for their "expertise" when it comes to inexpensive, readily found LRB's that are rarely fake.

The asking prices for LRB's are appalling.

Nice coin for a fantastic price.

Yes, but...
That is exactly what you are doing when you buy such coins from full service dealers. They deserve to be compensated for their expertise and beginners benefit from the experience since they don't know they can come here and get led down a path (right or wrong) by one of our resident experts.

Coin dealers all have what I call a nuisance price to cover the nuisance value or trouble of handling the coins they sell. For some this is several hundred dollars and they sell no coin below that price. I know dealers of equal expertise that have $3 pickout bins filled with coins worth $1 to $5 and they will generally not select a coin for you from these bins. If you want them to ID the coin fully, look in their $7 box where you will find coins hardly any better but with twice the service included.

We all hate to see a beginner buy a $5 coin for $25 under the opinion that what was bought was a $25 coin. It was a $5 coin with a $20 service charge. Try to sell it back to the dealer and see what I mean. I have bought $50 coins for $100 (called 'something I wanted') and $100 coins for $50 (called a 'difference of opinion') but after almost 50 years in the hobby I'm expected to take care of myself at least a lot of the time. Consider the $20 handling charges part of the cost of education and try, when possible, to pay them to people who deserve them because they actually did add something to your coin's value rather than just think they deserve to make a 100% markup on every coin they sell.
