Bank Of Canada 1912-14 Gold Coin Special RCM Release

$10 1914 Might be the new low Mintage coin, or at least 2nd lowest.

I was watching the video of Sandy Campbell discussing his involvement with the release of coins. At one point he mentioned that 85-90% of the 1914 $10 gold coin was at the mint. That would mean of the 140,068, 119,000-126,000 were never released. With the Mint selling 14,949, that leaves a remaining mintage of between 29,000-36,000. Unfortunately (in terms of value, not collectability), a minimum of 14,949 will be MS.

Which leaves roughly 95,000 coins split among the remaining years/denominations to be melted. If some of $5 1914's were melted, it will remain the lowest mintage.

I think that the $5 1914 will still remain the most valuable of the $5, even with this release. Based on PCGS population report and this release, the 1912 and 1914 will have a similar number MS graded coins, but the 1912 mintage is 5x larger, even if half of the 95,000 coins to be melted were 1912 $5, it will still be 4x larger. Hopefully the RCM will release the actual count of melted coins.

For $10 coins, I think the 1914 will drop significantly in value, as the mint held 85-90% of supply and will be release 15,000 MS coins, but the new mintage level should give it some price support.

Overall, I think it will be interesting to see how this release impacts the interest in this series of coins. Personally, it has allowed me to acquire a couple coins at grades that I would not have purchased and with the increase in supply, hopefully the others will be acquired more easily or at least at affordable prices.

@ Tripoli: Thanks for the info about J&M. Was the $10 1912 from the $12,000 Premium Set? Is Joe selling the Premium Set for $12,000? And is he selling the other premium and/or hand-select coins a mint issue price (my guess highly unlikely).

He is asking $15,000 for the premium set....he was asking a premium for certain coins if you cherry picked his selection, which I can totally respect. The 1912 $10 from the premium set was really nice. All his 1912 $10 HS's, he's keeping to sell as part of sets.
Yes, the set comes with an extremely attractive box, and what is cool is the original bag and tag.

I'm curious myself to see what they are charging. Definitely they aren't charging issue prices.

So how much is J&M charging for a 1914 $5 HS coin? You mentioned a premium for certain coins.

I don't want to mention any numbers, but if you chose one coin at random, that was one price, if you cherry picked his selection, he was asking a premium. YMMV with J&M, so I don't want to mention any prices.

received 1913/14 $10.00 coins today... 4 in total.....reverses are MS 65-66 pretty much perfect..obverses are typically small baggy MS63 ....I would grade them overall MS 64 because the reverses are so nice and the lustre is primo

if I send them to PCGS will they get a 63 or 64?

any thoughts?

with Morgans, there are plenty of examples of 62s and 63s with very clean reverses and scuffy obverses. >>
..however with Morgans the obverse is also the dated side

with the Canada gold Hoard the dated side is the best side which is the Reverse

anyways I'm gonna send some in to PCGS and thats mainly because they have a special label produced for them ...the Canada equivalent ICCS seldom designates special issues and I havent heard any buzz on their program for dealing with these coins. Also its apparent that PCGS has had a foot in the door of the RCM over these coins for 2 years at least so it would appear that ICCS isn't trying too hard probably due to the fact that they have cornered the Canada coin mkt in cert coins for many decades now..... I think the bomb grades will be certified by PCGS and achieve the greatest value this way as usual......
