Why are dealers like Gatewest not selling these coins? Is it because they are not getting their usual 10-15% off for NCLT coins? As these are circulation coins, I don't think dealers get a discount.

You can almost be assured of nothing. Canadapost will not have these coins and I haven't heard of any official dealers having any.

i am close friends with a RCM dealer and these coins were not offered to dealers They could buy just like the rest of us, thats it. No discounts, no stock set aside. So any dealer telling you otherwise is pulling you're leg

i guarantee canadian coin and currency will have all of these coins AND the set. The owner of the store is the same guy who runs the coin show on the shopping channel...i think. Or he is at least one of them. In any case, they are the closest with the mint out of all the stores.

I highly doubt it. Unless they are selling their coins when they are still available at the mint. I'd almost guarantee that the dealers will list the $5 coins higher than the mint's price. Look what's happening on ebay already. If the quality of these coins is much poorer than expected that could change things a bit.

my local dealer (a listed, official RCM dealer/distributor) will have these coins. But, from the brief chat I had with him he'll only go through with his order if he has customers interested beforehand. this is not going to turn out well I don't think.

Due to the fact that the quality of these coins is HIGHLY subjective, this has the potential to turn ugly very fast in the secondary market. I think that Canadian Coin and Currency took their change and got to hand pick their "hand picked" coins before anyone else. It only makes good business sense. Of corse, this is something we will never know, until we have received our coins, in which case I can walk over to that store and compare my hand selected to theirs.
If you are selling, SELL NOW before people receive their coins and all sorts of issues (potentially) start to arise. However, because these coins are very close to the current trends (assuming they are of grades higher than VF or AU) I dont see this causing a huge issue because of pricing.

Here are the reviews of customers that bought from the Royal Canadian Mint - Vintage Canadian Silver Dollar Collection... Hopefully the Mint's process on selecting quality coins have improved since this last promotion. To say the Mint has employees that are great at choosing coins is an understatement given the harsh comments of buyers of these Silver Dollar coins. http://reviews.mint.ca/product-revi...on-2012.htmlI am not sure if the Mint crafted the following words carefully when they stated the difference between premium selected and hand selected: Premium Hand-Selected coins were hand-picked by Mint "personnel" for maximum eye-appeal and nearly pristine quality. Hand-selected by Mint "staff" for a high quality appearance, with minimal evidence of wear caused by handling, storage, or environmental conditions, Is there a difference between the two? They could have both stated the word 'personnel' in both situations. In my opinion, I would be lead to believe that the Mint personnel has better experience than a Mint staff. Considering the employees had to sort through individually 245,000 coins is way too much work for even a staff of 50, your eyes and fingers would start playing tricks. Also the staff at the Vancouver RCM boutique store are not Mint employees, but employed by a temp agency - they are paid through the temp agency payroll.

I am very new to coins but was thinking about this all day. Is it safe to assume the 1912-1914 $5/$10 HP's would always hold a decent value on a secondary market because of their historic merits and bullion weight? If a 1/2oz maple is selling for $900-950 with spot just below $17xx, then a $100-300 premium above spot sounds like a decent play or is it a speculative play? Would spot prices rising to say $19xx crush the premiums these coins would carry down the road?
Do I make any sense in thinking like this? As for Canadian Coin, they sure look like the dealer that would be selling these after the mint releases their first shipments in the new year.

The price we paid was not horrible over spot, especially for such a "rare" coin that has nigh collector value. However, to all of our luck...gold fell by over $50 since the sale of these coins....
