Well good evening everyone, my grandmother recently decided to go through some of her old jewelry and sell of some of the things she doesn't want anymore. Among them were two coins that she's had since the 1920's which is nothing compared to the apparent age. One was obviously a turkish coin but the other has me stumped being that is looks just way too clean to be Roman/not a reproduction. Any help or nudge in the right direction is greatly appreciated. This is not Roman, but rather a coin of of the Republic of Venice. I know almost nothing about these coins except that the coin you presented is suppose to be a Ducato of Michael Steno, struck 1400-1413. Like I said, I know nothing, but I think the original coin was struck in gold, so your coin may be a copy. Perhaps someone else in the know will comment. In the meantime, take a look at these links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coinag...ic_of_Venice; http://www.mcsearch.info/search.htm...milar:748158

I am pretty sure there are silver and billon coins with a smilar motif. I had a Doge Steno soldino (sp) in very rough condition. If you could share with us the weight of the coin, that would be a big help.

This looks like gold photographed poorly to me. The stretched hole from being on a chain is consistent with gold and harder to do with other metals. If the background is white, the coin is golden. I can not say that this one is genuine (or not). Fakes exist and it is not my area.

Well I can definitely tell you that they're gold and the supposed ducato is weighing in at about 2.8 grams, though I'll take it being a few grams off because the scale was only fit for weighing mail.

I am glad I was able to find the coin in question, but it was pure luck for me to stumble upon it. Neither the image nor your description indicated it was gold, so perhaps you have a very nice medieval coin. From what I see on line, the price for similar pieces without a hole sell for upwards of $350. Good luck with this piece and stick around. You might find something interesting here.

Interesting piece! It looks like it may have never seen the ground, I wonder where its been between now and when it was minted.
