Quote: How much do they charge for that and who does the re-grade? http://www.pcgs.com/guarantee.htmlThe fee is $25 and is refunded if the coin is downgraded. It is done by PCGS themselves. Quote:There are NO Australian TPG's so that is a moot point. True. But apart from a refund, and I might be wrong here, I don't think raw coin dealers will give you the price difference if they overgraded a coin and you brought it to their attention. As I said, I might be wrong on this.

Quote: A MS70 or FDC coin has to be perfect it every aspect of the coin (Including strike), If the grader doesn't have the intimate knowledge of a certain coin type then how can they grade them accurately Well which aspect of grading do you believe requires specific expertise? You could argue strike does, but all it takes is an illustration of a perfectly struck up coin. Grading, except in the case of eye appeal, is a definable process, once you understand the process you can grade any coin without experience. Experience can help you grade coins faster but unless you know everything, this will always trade-off accuracy and thus isn't suitable for TPG services. The only advantage specific expertise can offer PCGS is differentiating strike types (MS,PR,SP), variety attribution and Counterfeit Detection.

WWWWW you are missing my point entirely. illustrations, websites, google etc are helpful But hands on and years of handling coins and dealing in them is by far a better understanding of how to grade a coin is a better option. I am only a collector and have a basic knowlage of how to grade ( rubbish,OK,not bad. nice, realy nice. beutifull and outstanding)

Of course experience helps, but that wasn't what I interpreted as your point. If that's your point, then PCGS and NGC have more of that than anyone, wouldn't that make them the best graders?

wwwww you are missing my point entirely. I am purely a collector and my personal grading system is . Rubbish,OK,not bad, nice, really nice, sweet, amazing and outstanding. Add to this polished, dipped and fake. Regardless of the grading system used it basically comes down to this for me. My position is we should have our resident honest collectors/dealers grading our own Australian coins, using the wealth of knowledge they possess to slab Aussie coins. Crikey why is this so hard to achieve

There needs to be a market for it. At the moment PCGS and NGC can fill the limited demand easily. They are trusted, established companies. It would be a HUGE effort to start an entirely fresh third party grading company in Australia. Its unlikely to happen.

APCGS has been brought up a few times but I haven't heard of any personal experiences about them. For Australian coins, if you do decide to purchase a coin graded by a third party, PCGS and NGC are the better options. Hope you enjoy your stay, and we look forward to your input. -rob

NO. The best scenario would be that the graders are named on the slab instead of hiding behind a corporate identity eg PCGS NGC ICCS etc and they would have to put their own reputation on the line. I am confident that we have Australian experts in this field that would do this and reap the rewards for doing it. We will eventually get an Australian TPG, It is just a matter of time and courage for someone to start one up

News to me as well Trout and their prices look very reasonable. To correct what I said before they haven't been around for 25 years but their graders have 25 years experience and I'd say that this is the Australian TPG that I had asked about in previous posts

Theres no way I would send coins to a company which I have never heard of. Unless I heard more about them, who is behind the setup and saw some examples of their work I wouldnt be convinced that theyre not a huge scam company. I read another post on this forum about people in the UK sending coins off for appraisals by a seemingly legitimate company only to have them stolen.

i will send 4 coins in for grading with this mob, Just to see how they turn out. I'll make sure they are MS or at least AU55, They will be coins that if they go "Missing" it won't break my heart. If this company IS genuine and grades fairly and accurately then we WILL have an Aussie TPG I will post the coins here so that we can all grade them before I announce the grade on the slab. I think that is the fairest way of finding out how good they are
