I acquired this in a lot of coins recently.

A genuine coin is 12.5g of 50% silver. This one is 10.58g and looks rather brassy.

I think it may be cast.
It wouldn't have been worth forging this to fool coin collectors, but as a 1/2 sol was worth slightly more than 2 shillings (10p) in 1928, it might have been worth forging them in Peru.

Are contemporary forgeries of Peruvian 1/2 sols of this period known ?

It's definitely a cast fake. Whether intended to circulate or not, and how much it actually did circulate, is anybody's guess at this juncture. But fake coins have lots of other origins besides attempted circulating counterfeits. For example, I have seen several Latin American fake coins made into tourist souvenirs; this old thread has a fake Panama balboa inlaid into a wooden box.

But at virtually any time in history when silver coins have circulated, fake silver coins have tried to circulate alongside them.

I thought they contained less silver than that. I'd have to look.
But the color is definatly off. I'm thinking an off-metal strike, but I cant think of what
the planchet may have been intended for.

That coin is really suspect. I have a few Peruvian coins from this period and all are very detailed and well struck.
Even the much smaller 1/2 Dinero coins look like this:

Thanks,everyone.

Especially for the old thread - I saw a similar piece at auction but I wasn't willing to pay more than the winning bid - lucky I didn't and for the picture of the 1/2 dinero - not listed in my 35th edition of KM.
