I found a religious medal the other day. It doesn't have a stamp on it, but I think it's gold. It has the look that old gold has and it has a lot of weight for its size. It also looks as though a jeweler made it and wasn't stamped out on a machine. How can I be sure?

acid test (take it into a pawn shop or jeweller, they can tell you the gold content, exact weight, you can determine the value.

is it magnetic? gold and silver are NOT magnetic.

theres not too many physical tests you can do other than magnet without supplies, you coudl post a picture, I'm sure one of the members here might know!

Thanks for replying jackedacc. I'l try the magnet until I can get to my coin shop. I'm hunting for a camera now, so I can't post a pic.
(We lost all of our jewelry last year, so a find would be grace at this point.)

blackjack,

Just take it to the local pawn or 'cash for gold' B&M and let them test it. Tell them you are thinking of selling it. If it isn't gold, they won't make an offer. You are under no obligation to sell. Just thank them and move along. People do this to me everyday. Some come back after getting low ball offers from the competition.

Most any jewelry store will also test jewelry items for gold content as part of their free bid to buy the item. Just make sure that there is no obligation on you to sell the tested item.
