I picked this up at my LCS awhile back as an impulse buy (my focus was on notes made after 1900 but the price was right and it looked interesting): Since buying it, however, I've noticed that every other example of this Series that I have seen since then has a much larger seal on the obverse. The Series was apparently re-issued in 1891 with a smaller seal, but this note clearly states "Series 1886" and the reverse is the fancier version that was used in 1886 and not the simplified version that was used in 1891. Do I have a counterfeit, or did they make the Series 1886 with both a large and a small seal?

All right, I swear I saw a response to this thread a minute ago, but it seems to have vanished without a trace...

It looks legit to me ...
It's 1886 series:
- Blue Serial Number
- S.N. starts with letter B
As for the "Seal", the colors and sizes vary for 1886 series (4 seal varieties).
Apart from this, the "obverse" of 1891 series does have MARTHA WASHINGTON written in tiny letters below the portrait. Besides, its Serial Number always starts with letter E.
Cheers

Yes ...
Prices vary if they are in UNC condition:
- Small Red Seal with plain border
- Large Red Seal
- Large Brown Seal
- Large Brown Seal with spiked border
- Small Red Seal with scalloped border
The cheapest one of them is the last one
Cheers

Ah. Well, mine is certainly not in UNC condition and it looks like it has the small red seal with the scalloped border. I guess that's why I didn't pay too much for it...
Thanks again!

Looks like an F-221 to me. But my book has it as the most expensive of the 1886s in UNC.

Well, I just went ahead and ordered a book on U.S. Currency ("A Guide Book of United States Paper Money" by Arthur and Ira Friedberg), so hopefully I'll soon be able to figure it out myself for sure.

Same book I have. It only has a picture of one of the 4 types of 1886s but just read the descriptions below.

Even with the more common small red seal, the Martha Washington's are extremely attractive. I've been eyeing one with the large brown for a while, just can't seem to collect the money I need to obtain it.
