I have a 1936 wheat that seems rather thick and has unusual surfaces. Could it be a proof? Are there any definitive diagnostics?

Thanks in advance!

Two types of proof finishes were made in '36. Any pictures? Does not need to be closeup shots.

Probably not, the 36 proof is a rare coin with a mintage of only around 5k.

Thad, you are probably right. To re-pose my question, I wonder what causes the "brighter" color of this 1936. I took a picture of it beside a normal-colored coin from the same series.

To my eye, the 1936 is more yellow than the blue suggested by the picture. Also, not showing up on my picture are some tiny streaks running NW-SE on the coin. That might be PMD or planchet flaws.

Anyhow, sorry for the poor quality pictures. I hope it helps a bit.

To follow up on something: Do you notice around the obverse rim, date, and "LIBE" how there is a light haze in the field? This is the kind of thing I'm considering unusual coloring. I'm not an expert with wheats, but I've seen my fair share and find this one a bit odd.

Thanks for having a look!
