I have been buying ASE and common date Morgans over the last couple months, a little here and there from the LCS, no more than a hundred dollars or so at a time. I'd love to buy something gold (probably a fractional AGE to keep it easy?) but the margin for making an error/regret on buying a $200 - $500 coin is a lot higher than on a $35-40 coin. How long did you wait before stepping up into the "Big Boy League?"

I bought my first gold coin (1/2oz maple) once I hit the 50oz silver mark. I guess that was about 8 months into my stacking. I've sold it since but will get back into it soon..$$$$ permitting. But this time I think 1/4oz ers are where I'm going to hang out. $930 is a good chunk of change to dish out at once. Had no regret buying in the first place. But have to admit...1/2oz gold looked so lonely beside the silver stack. I still prefer silver.

I buy silver one week, gold/platinum one week
though if a good silver, gold or platinum deal pop up I don't hesitate to buy.

I got gold after I sold my silver at $50 an ounce and waited... Not a lot of silver but 2 oz of gold... Great for a YN!

I started after stacking around 50 t oz of silver. I pretty much bought my first small gold simply for the experience of going through the gold buying process. Like my silver purchases, I researched what was popular verses what I happened to like. Reviewed commissions every which way from several dealers. Evaluated my comfort level buying online verses buying local (I bought local for my first gold purchase). After that, I just picked a completely arbitrary "ratio" of Au to Ag and set my long term buying goals.

In spite of gold's high price and the apparent superior opportunities offered by stacking silver, I have to say I really like owning gold, even if it's only a tiny portion of my PM stack. It's largely irrational, I admit that. But it's incredibly satisfying once you have that first gold in hand.

I've been buying silver since I was 9 and would receive silver and gold as gifts throughout my childhood (thank you Yukon Cornelius!). I bought my first 1/10 and 1 ounce Gold Eagles with the first paycheck from my first 'real' job back in 1995 and have been stacking ever since.

I also started somewhere around August and bought my first AGE shortly there after. I buy ASE and AGE for investments. I buy Pandas, Koalas, Kookaburras and Britannias for their beauty and as collections and look at their silver value as a bonus.

I saw a damaged, ex-jewelry $1 gold at my LCS last time I was there. The guy about my age priced it to me at $90. I was tempted. if it's still there next time, I just might buy it.

Still stacking silver, so no gold yet and maybe never. We'll see. Silver seems to have a much bigger upside potential than does gold but maybe that's just my perception. Anyway, my stack just went over 1400 oz., thanks to getting 75 silver Maples and 80 ASEs within the past month, and a small baggie of 90% US coins just the other day.

My reasons for stacking silver are many but chief among them is that they will make great barter items at some point if Bernanke and the US Gov continue to cheapen US currency. The Fed has a history of catching on to an economic problem too late, cutting interest rates too low, and then holding them there for too long. Then, they sit around at their FOMC meetings, scratching their heads and wondering what is causing all these confounded financial bubbles. Well, DUH!

While watching some You Tube videos last month, I came across a documentary that was made about life in Zimbabwe and how very difficult it has become to live there. It told a story of MANY people in that failed country grubbing for a few tiny flakes of gold. Some were digging, some were panning, and some had a sluice box set up and running. In all cases, the goal was to recover 0.3 grams of gold per family per day. That is what it takes to continue living there. People also had gardens wherever possible and were growing lots of vegetables and some chickens.

I thought about what this video was telling us and came up with thew following:

1) 0.3 gram of gold @ $1700/oz = about $16
2) Silver was at about $32/oz. then, so this is equal to 1/2 oz. of silver.
3) Bernanke and Geithner seem intent on using the Zimbabwe method of currency
management and could very well have the same result.
4) There are 8 people in my family, including me, my wife, our two kids, and 2
grand kids. In a similar survival situation, we would need 1/2 oz. of silver
per day to buy food. If bad times last for 3 years, that amounts to about
550 ozs. and more if hard times last longer than 3 years. Additionally, the
cost of living in the US is considerably higher than in Zimbabwe, so there
could be a 2-3x multiplier in there to compensate for that.
5) Because of the above, a minimum stack for us should be 2,000
ozs. and this is just for food. Other bills could add to this, so another
500-1000 oz. of silver could be needed to cover these expenses.

Excellent posts guys. It's good knowing what's been done so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. Think I will work toward that 50oz of silver and then pick up some fractional gold. Next year's property taxes and 12mo of insurance are due next month so it will be slow going for awhile.

Haven't started buying any gold yet, riding the silver train for a while. Once I get comfortable with the roller coaster ride that comes with PMs I think I'll put on my big boy pants ;)
