I haven't been to the F.U.N. show before, and I have only been to a local/small coin show. At the local show, there is usually a table setup to buy coins or PM. Will there be such a table at the F.U.N. show in January?

As a rough guess, you'll be able to choose between roughly 50-100 tables for each specialty. I mean, darn near everyone at a given coin show is prepared to sell as well as buy; it's one of the bases dealers have to cover to keep themselves in stock with stuff they know they can sell.

A good dealer knows his clientele, and what they want. So a whole lot of the trade at a given show is between dealers offering each other the stuff they can't move but someone else can.

Know what you have; know what it's worth; and be prepared to sell at a price allowing the dealer a profit. You're going to probably have to wander and actively "sell" your stuff; don't sell to the first offer unless it's a number you like. Approach tables where they're selling what you're selling.

Edited to add: Be real with yourself. Chances are, you'll have an easier time moving PM than low-dollar coins. The latter isn't worth a dealer's effort to physically transport, so if that's what you got, concentrate on local dealers.

Trying to complete (best I can) my Morgan dollar Set, realized I have extra coins and PM to fund these last few purchases. If I go to my local coin show next month, I will give your suggestion a try. And probably do some at the F.U.N. show in Jan.

I have only been to 1 coin show in my life and never been to a coin store. The once I was at a coin show it was a larger show in Charlotte put together by the ANA and I was overwhelmed. I am going to try really hard to attend the F.U.N. show in January and if I do I know I am going to have to have a lot more focus than I had the first time as I went in wanting specific things but came out wondering why I purchased some of the things I purchased as it was definitely nothing I was actively looking for. I did get one coin I went there to find and that was a 3ยข silver coin for my 7070 album but the rest I had no idea why I got them. I had never seen a Britannia before the show and ended up with 5 in my pocket by the end of the day just because I saw them and liked them. Then when I saw something I was actually there looking for I had spent most of my money on things I didn't really need

Bryan, either focus or leave your plastic at home. I'm begging you.

To the F.U.N. show, I plan on taking some coins, some PM, and some cash. I hope to only spend $$ from what I sell, plus the cash.
The plastic will only be for the trip.

Selling to dealers at a show can be trickier than it would seem.

This may seem obvious but it is all about finding someone who has a need for what you are trying to get rid of. Those are the dealers who are gonna give you the best cash offer/trade. Just remember that almost every dealer will buy what you are offering but if they only view it as "generic stock" inventory, they are going to place a low value on it.

Also, watch out for scenarios like this: At Baltimore, I tried trading with a dealer for a coin in his case. He started telling me what he could get for my coins on ebay and that he had to make a profit. I'm thinking to myself, "this guy is nickel and dimeing me" on this trade. Why would I take a loss on my coins just so someone else can sell them on ebay? I did not come all the way to a coin show just for that and there were hundreds of other dealers in the room. It was then I realized I had to walk away from that deal and find someone who "wanted" what I was offering.

Good luck!

I went to my first FUN show this past January. Even though the guy I went w/ told me it would be "BIG", I guess I underestimated the size. It was HUGE! I was overwhelmed too. I knew what I wanted to find, but w/ sooo many tables, it was hard to keep focused. This time around I will be ready, and will only purchase what I am looking for... unless I find something better that I can't live w/out.

Also, make sure you give yourself enough time. I went on the first day and didn't end up getting to see everything. I don't personally thin one day is long enough and may go two days next time.

Another two questions, and #2 has two parts:
Part 1: Do you think Saturday and Sunday will be too over-crowded?

Part 2a: Do you think its worth taking extra vacation time from work to be there Friday?
Part 2b: Is the entry fee one price for the day, or is that reduced at/after lunch?

Fuzzy...

I went on Thursday last year and the crowd wasn't that bad. Although I didn't go on Sat, I would assume that is the biggest day crowd-wise for people who work Mon-Fri

I plan on going the first day again, just so I don't have to fight through the crowd... and also to get first shot at what I'm looking for. Depending on where you live and whether or not you have to get a hotel, I personally would recommend taking a day off if you can.

There's an $8.00 parking fee at the convention center, but admission to the actual show was free

Also, there's a smaller FUN show in the summer. Not nearly as big as the Jan show, but worthwhile none the less.

Thanks for the information Dave.

I am north of Atlanta, so its about an 8 hour trip to get there. My plans currently are to get there Friday afternoon, ~ 2-2:30pm.

I'm not 100% positive when I'll be going, but if I can arrange it, maybe we could meet at the show?
