our modern dollar coins are near the same size as large cents of the 19th century
I happened to notice this today when I paid 3 golden dollars for a 1912 Candian large cent

I noticed the same thing when I picked up my 1851 large cent a few weeks back.

sad part is that the cent, in its day, probably had more buying power than the $1 of today

The large cent is probably worth more in melt value too.

I also noticed that a while back .. and started putting Canada large cents in small dollar tubes.
