First off, thank you for any advice I may receive. I'm new to coin collecting and to coin roll hunting. Its always intrigued me because I was use to work in a bank, and now I own a pawn shop. I know about silver coins because thats 99% of what I see in my shop.

Coin roll hunting as really intrigued me. I do have some questions though I'm hoping to get some good advice on.

I know when I'm hunting rolls to always look for silver. Besides that, what do you guys look for?

Do you sit their and inspect the front and back of every single coin or do you have some kind of system or something to look for when your doing this?

Ive gone through about 100 rolls so far and was only looking for silver and wheaties. I feel like I should be looking for more and curious if I should and what to do look for.

Also, do you guys keep trying to complete runs of newer stuff. For instance trying to get all the quarters from 1965-2000 etc

Final question. Do you guys keep your copper pennies? If so, what do you do with them?

Thanks again!

I would recommend that you get 2 books. (1) The Official Red Book and (2) Strike It Rich With Pocket Change 3rd Edition. [i]

When I first started I had some of the same questions. Fortunately, my Brother had far more knowledge than I did. He still does about most coins. So I just asked him. I borrowed his 2010 Red Book so often that he finally told me to go get my own. I also bought Pocket Change and [i]Cherrypickers' Guide 5th Edition
together. I like the CherryPickers' Guide but I find that I do not use it very often.

Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Thanks for the info. I've read that link and its some great info.

I do have a question though. Do you guys keep the nicer common coins and try to complete sets at all? If so, is this profitable at all for you?

Also, can someone help explain what the Kennedy half proofs are that are found in rolls. I found a kennedy I believe a 1986 and it seems slightly larger then the rest of the kennedys.

Thanks

Also had another question I forgot to ask. The coins you take back to the bank, do you roll those, or just take them all in a giant bag and let the bank send them in and process them?

you can do either or....you might want to ask around at certain banks to see if they accept rolls...no bank where I live accepts rolled coins...you have to find a bank with a coin counter and do it that way (which is the easiest unless you dont trust the coin counters which some people here do not)...i trust them as they are almost always spot on or a few cents off either above or below what I know I had in the dump I take in...i do notice when I do dimes though that the dime may be counted as a penny( took in a few hundred in ONLY dimes and somehow ended up with a number like 199.82 meaning they counted 2 dimes as pennies which kind of sucked and have explained to them that there was only dimes in there but they will not do much about it...but some advice dont take the coins back in to the place where you get them from...they will get mad! haha

I have many banks in my area, and about 3% of them use counters. Almost all accept rolled coin.
I have developed a good relationship with one CU that lets me dump loose coin in $500 bags, and I get my cash back immediately. Another credits my account when the dimes are counted as cents.
One place lets me buy bags off the counting machine.
It's all about gaining a good relationship with your bank.
