Voshus007 Valued Member United States 442 Posts	Posted 12/03/2012 12:45 pm i ran across this ebay listing not thinking anything of it just saved it to my watch list then a day later I was on there messing around zoomed in and on the barber half I noticed that it was a 1892 then I got excited so I looked at the back and it looks like there might be a mint mark? I wanted to know what everyone here thinks of it, its in bad shape but still its a 1892 and would make a great addition to the 10 days of diminishing grades of us classic coins... g048406 Pillar of the Community 861 Posts	Posted 01/16/2013 10:02 pm OK, I bought the coin in question. Yes, it is an 1892-o Barber Half. I was able to remove the black crud that was caked on top of the "O" mint mark. It has clearly exposed the "O". I was unable to remove the rest of the black crud. Not a nice looking coin, but, easily worth $40+. Anybody have any ideas how to get the rest of that black cryd removed? Report this Post to the Staff

Gyrene7483 Pillar of the Community United States 1704 Posts	Posted 01/16/2013 11:38 pm From the looks of the "crud" it appears to have been in a fire. Severely overheated coins get a thin layer of black crust which can and will flake off in the manner your coin exhibits. When removed it also takes off a thin layer of metal leaving a shadow of the detail that was originally there. There isn't any way I know of to safely remove the black crust off without further damaging the coin. Too bad it's an O mint coin because it is a better date. g048406 Pillar of the Community 861 Posts	Posted 01/16/2013 11:51 pm I actually used a toothpick to pick at the black crud near the mint mark....after a few picks at it, a pice of the crud flaked-off exposing the mint mark. I tried using the toothpick on the rest of the black crud, but, nothing else flaked-off. Report this Post to the Staff
