I just noticed this Columbian Half sold on ebay for $75
It can't be more than XF and likely is cleaned at that
I can easily get coins such as the one sold here from local dealers at a dollar or two over melt.
Talk about a premium! Pure madness.

Prices on ebay go all over the map for sure. Your lucky though if you have places you can get commems especially classic ones close to melt. Real hit or miss with those and a lot of areas are pretty dry for them.

$75 is obscene when there are pieces of the same if not better quality readily available for at most a third of that on ebay.

Columbians I can find close to melt regularly, other common early commems are much harder to find at low premiums. Though occasionally a beat up Booker or Washington Carver will pop up near melt here and there.

There's another BIN for the same coin on the Bay for $75.

But if anyone on the forum is looking to buy that, please let me know privately and I can get you one at a much much more reasonable price.

High yea, but I wouldnt call it obscene. It only takes two people to want it to get those prices.

Lol nicely done on listing the new one.

I noticed your reply after my initial one

I do wish this series was more prevalent at local shops. Seems only the large stores carry them and internet is where the bulk of those purchases have to be right now

It really is quite amazing what the brick and mortar shops will send out to get melted these days, especially foreign items. I picked a 1891 British Florin in at least XF condition out of the melt bin of a dealer in the business for over 30 years. I paid melt for it, and it catalogs in Krause at over $200. I even had a guy tell me that he had sent a holed three dollar gold piece to a smelter.

Its really does seem like with the exception of the big time shops, most brick and mortar shops are only interested in things that will move fast. I'm sure the lower prices overall with the economy have eaten into profits needing to melt things to pay the bills or not being able to afford to have things sit around for a bit. I definitely understand if thats the case, just limits the ways to purchase series like the classic commems for those of us that like it

The only really nice of Colombian material I have is not numismatic. OR drugs.

I am also a gem cutter, and that material is emerald - from the Muzo Mine.

There are two other Colombian mines which yield top quality emerald rough, they are the Chivor Mine, and the Galacha Mine.

The stones from each mine can be distinguished by their 'jardin' (inclusions).

About 3 months ago a new "we buy gold, silver and coins" shop opened near me. I was in the area and stopped in to check out what they had. Pulled this out of their "junk" bucket at melt along with some decent common date Barber and WL halfs. It became my new pocket piece until the relief shines up a bit to give it the circulated cameo look that I like. So far, so good.
